Dude, I know exactly what you are talking about. I was trying to find the entrance for like half an hour before it just appeared randomly right before my eyes!!!

Also try Rockmilk Cave, right outside of Bravil, it has constant Black Bow bandit/marauder fights so most enemies are dead already. Also you can sell black bows to Marius Caro, Count of Leyawiin

Another good ruin is Nornal, an Ayleid Ruin. Its an undead ruin, and you must be able to get on top of water (River Walk: waterwalk 15 sec, scroll) or a high athletics
