Hmm, this is rather perplexing. So I loaded an earlier save, then got caught up again. I spoke with Oreyn and got the quest, then spoke with him again to make sure he didn't think I had killed anyone. Afterwards, I fast-traveled to the Blackwood Company, completed the quest by the book, and returned ...

I did commit a couple of murders in this really out of the way town during a quest, but I spoke with Oreyn after that to originally get the Blackwood Company quest and he didn't say anything. I loaded an earlier game to undo all of that anyway, and I'm going to try completing the quest again.

I've heard a lot of good things about Mass Effect, but I've heard a lot of bad things too. It seems like Mass Effect is one of those games where you either hate it or you love it...what I'm most iffy about is the battle sequences, which apparently aren't very good.
