The 'disappearing' bottom interface is a feature, not a bug
The three coloured bars represent health, mana and stamina. You can go back to the normal interface by right-clicking on the bars.

I used to hate mind flayers too, until i discovered Korgan made all his saves against their psionic & domination attacks EVERY time (dwarfs have very low saving throws, should've thought of that earlier). ok maybe i'm splitting hairs here but isn't it a strange idea that you could hide in shadows when in slayer form (from a RP PoV)? i mean, that slayer thing is so huge and ugly, it seems rather unlikely it would go unnoticed. consequently, it would be possible with aid of an invisibility spell (again ...

i've had Keldorn with Viconia in a party, and Minsc with Edwin too. They never did much more than barf at each other, sometimes intervened by my PC, which was in both occasions Neutral Good with 19 charisma (not sure if this matters in these conflicts). so i'd say there can be problems with those ...

If i'm not mistaken there's a merchant in Waukeen's Promenade who can upgrade the Horn of Blasting. I'd have to check some walkthroughs though just be sure i'm not giving you any false hope :D
