Oh, I understood how to play the game well enough. It turned out to be a bug in my case. I wasn't sure at first, which is why I titled the post the way I did.

Thanks kmonster - I really thought it was a bug. Was thinking about the EOU mod but wanted the extra xp from doing the game room battles. Might re-install without the patches, though I don't want to start over. Running with the 2.01 patch, the tweaks mod and the widescreen mod. Dammit anyway!!

Sorry guys, but I've read all the posts and the online walk-through and I'm not getting the battle squares game. In particular, I don't understand how you transition from one level to the next.
