Sorry guys, but I've read all the posts and the online walk-through and I'm not getting the battle squares game. In particular, I don't understand how you transition from one level to the next.
I'm only doing rank 1. I complete level 1 by getting three squares in a row. The golem doesn't say anything except select destination square. The three squares I selected for level 1 are still selected. How do I start level 2? Not rank 2, just level 2 of rank 1? I went ahead and started level 2, but it's hard to keep track of the squares you selected since the squares from level 1 are still selected. If I try switching the mode lever, the golem says "defeat" and the rest of my party reappears. I know I have to win 5 levels to complete the rank.
Could someone please explain how I'm supposed to switch from level 1 to level 2? Thanks!

When you win a level there's a ~33 percent chance to get XP as if killing a monster with CR rank+5 instead of a valuable reward.
You are unlucky if you get XP for winning a level, the items or money you'd get are far more useful on the long run, so unless you spend days for reloading you won't get something more beneficial than with EoU.

I don't mean to come off sounding overly harsh, but I've never understood why Battle Squares was so difficult for some people to figure out. Oh, I understand why doing all 250 individual battles is incredibly tedious, which is why I always use the Ease of Use mod to skip it now. But BSQ is nothing more than a glorified version of Tac-Tac-Toe (TTT).
The 3 leftmost switches (below the left door) control the mode that the room is in. And the other 10 switches above the left door and circling the room clockwise control which "rank" the room is operating on, starting with rank 1 just above the left door, and moving on up to rank 10.
There are 5 "levels" in each BSQ "rank". Level 1 is completing the TTT with 3 squares. Level 2 is completing the TTT with 4 squares, and so on up to Level 5 completing the TTT with 7 squares. And note that you can complete the "levels" in any order you desire. You don't have to go 3, 4, 5, 6, then 7. You could go 7, 4, 6, 3, 5 if that floats your boat. However, it is important to note that a "level" is completed when you have 3 squares in a row, so when you're trying to complete a level that has more than 3 squares in it, you have to take care to NOT have 3 in a row until you are ready to actually complete the level.
For example, when you are trying to complete a level with 7 squares, the grid should look something like this before you go for the 7th square. (o=empty square; x=taken square)
xxo
xox
oxx
Note that though you have 6 squares won, you don't have 3 squares in a row as yet, but that the next square you win will create 3 in a row and complete the level.
Another note, you are only required to complete a single rank to move on in the game. Completing all 10 ranks is entirely optional, though there are plenty of good reasons (XP, gold, items) for doing so. (Or you can use the "Skip BSQ" section of Ease of Use, and get all the good stuff and avoid the tedium.)

Oh, I understood how to play the game well enough. It turned out to be a bug in my case. I wasn't sure at first, which is why I titled the post the way I did.
When I first started the game and completed three squares in a row (consecutive, like tic-tac-toe), the golem would just keep prompting me to select destination. I never got the level won message. I had no problem getting the square acquired message (not right phrase, but it's the message you get when you win a single battle and the crossed swords show up on the square). I just never got any level won messages so I could continue with the next pattern to complete the rank.
I made sure I did the fights right in front of him, so it wasn't a sightline issue or something like that. I even tried completing the patterns for some of the higher levels (not ranks, I left the rank lever at 1), and the same thing happened.
Installed ease-of-use mod and all's well. I just never got the pleasure of kicking some monster ass at the higher ranks
