Thanks for the knowledge. You're right about the shark. How could a huge CR 4 shark be beaten by a fourth level party? Better hope you can fight underwater pretty well! :D

Next, I know about EL, but I didn't know it was that necessary for higher levels.

What I still wonder, though, is if most DM ...

Question about Monster CR's

It seems to me that appropriate monster levels are really easy. A 1st level party of 4 can take out a Troglodyte or two orcs with pathetic ease. When I had parties of 2 or 3, I didn't even have to modify the monsters much.

Can anyone tell me why Cr's are typically easy for a 4 person party?

This is a very advanced set up for the story if it took that many paragraphs to explain. I like that you have so much focus and imagination, one thing to notice though: your players might not.

If your players are hardcore and focused in on your story, then there won't be a problem. What I've ...

What House Rules do you use?

I would like some ideas of tried and true house rules to smooth over gameplay. No one can deny that D&D is full of complex rules and some of them don't fit in with your own group's style.

Here's some of my ideas for 3.5 edition:

Cure potions -Players can heal more HP by always getting at least ...

Excellent ideas!

In reply to Darth Gavinius: I have actually tried most of the things you suggested except being captured or escaping. Good ideas, though.

@Ur-Quan What an in-depth idea! The classic 3 days to live idea puts some good desperation into play.

Another idea I thought of is to have ...

The person before me had one great point that I'd like to emphasize. Don't worry much about time passing or food. The game has enough complicated rules to deal with that trivial things should only be involved if the DM feels a special need (Like in survival situations)

Making interesting adventure hooks

Hey, I've been DMing a few years but only in short low level sessions. Still, I know the rules well and I can make good adventures.

My problem is with adventure hooks that will interest players more. Could I have any suggestions on what a player looks for as insentive to go into that dark dungeon ...

Response Attacks of opportunity

I only use minis for straight up D&D, but I can help you with the attack of opportunities rules.

Attacks of opportunity are free melee attacks you get when an enemy provokes you. They provoke you by doing anything that leaves themselves open like:
-casting spells ...
