These creatures, when attacking, have a chance to destroy magical items. This is actually a bug, since they are only meant to drain spells from a caster's memory, and charges from items that have charges on them.

They didn't fix this ...

Mmm ... I think indeed the death penalty is too much. As it is, I am a casual gamer - in as much that I can only play during the evenings, about 3 hours or so, and not 24/7 like some people seem to be able to. As far as I know this is because you can't (officially) mem those lvl 9 spells in the first place. If there is no (valid) option to mem those spells, they apparently didn't take the time to code it so they could be used in a contingency spell.

I do play EQ (most of my free time goes into it!) and so does my brother.
