If you can't finish the quest it can be becouse the bridge was destroyed. I have made it five times and the game have bugged for me like that.

:D Well, if I were you I would go for the bardX/fighter4. You will still be a much higher level than the creeps you meet and you will have loads of extra hp. Later you can use haste so you don't lose any attacks really, especielly if you get boots of speed.

You will have a hell fighting mages and clerics with your Wisdow being 3. I had a bard/fighter/rogue solo with 8 wis and got whacked.
