Some builds - need help

Post by Valkos »

I am looking for some builds in particular, but they are hard to find.

A feint build.

There are so few of them posted anywhere, so I hope you guys have some ideas to show.

Also a monk build of many different sorts.

I do play on a low magic server, but there's huge teamplay. Maybe spellcasters owns, but when they reach high lvl, many chars have 1 hour between rests, so they must save their spells. I like to do dmg in a short period of time and LOADS of it. I might say that's one of the reasons im looking for a feint build that works.

STR or Dex based, either way it must work. STR would be cool, if you got something like that for it.

This is because you can't make a *really* good feint-based character. :(

But I'll go into optimal choices for you..

Some basic considerations:

1. You need the skill bluff.
2. You need a decent charisma (likely "buffed").
3. You need sneak attack damage.
4. You need to be able to *hit* your opponents, preferably as many times as possible in a round.

Note that when you take all 4 into consideration you *can NOT* possibly come up with a really good character, because of course several of the "requirements" above are in opposition to each other. For instance charisma takes up points in dexterity or strength, which reduces your ability to *hit* (and potentially damage). Furthermore, sneak attack damage classes are almost always medium BAB classes - again reducing your ability to *hit*. A high attack number is really the most limiting factor, BUT you also have the limit of Sneak Attack damage which will not work against a great variety of opponents.

When looking at a feint build most tend to look at Sneak Attack's limitation with respect to critically immune characters - and it *is* a good place to start, but IMO the real fault of most builds is their inability to hit higher AC opponents for a given level, PARTICULARLY with additional attacks.

With the above in mind lets start where you normally do:

Will we be striving for the feat EPIC PRECISION to at least obtain half damage for sneak attacks, or do we want to go a less sneak attack oriented route?

Within that question there are a LOT of variables that need to be addressed:

1. Do we want to wait until we can actually get EPIC PRECISION? Thats character level 21, at a MINIMUM. This character will have a serious "blind-spot" until then (..because unfortunately traps have taken a serious hit in damage and are much easier to spot).

2. *IF* we strive for good sneak attack damage *without* access to EPIC PRECISION we must really consider criticals as an alternative. A good critical attack character will often score similar damage on average to a sneak attack character - BUT usually *with* a much better BAB and overall attack number. IMO then this route is GONE!. So if you want good sneak attack damage without EPIC PRECISION then look to a high critical character instead.

3. As an alternative to #1 above we could sacrifice good or excellent Sneak Attack Damage for moderate Sneak Attack Damage, but add-in better "normal" damage modifiers.

So then - for a base feint build it starts with choosing between #1 and #3, OR something in-between.
............................................

Now then,

The next line of thought goes into the class Invisible Blade. A high BAB AND the feat Feint Mastery is enough to require this class for *any* feint build. The IB's quasi-sneak attack is an added extra, and while it adds to damage overall it unfortunately does *not* add to Sneak Attack damage (..effectively meaning its useless for the purpose of overcoming damage resistance/reduction AND its worthless for use with Epic Precision).

What you really need to consider with an Invisible Blade (and a feint build in general) is Dual-Weapon use.

Most people say you *need* to get Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting. THAT is just plain *WRONG*.:speech:

But why don't you need Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting?

Well its like this:

Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting will give you full BAB number of attacks per round, BUT against harder opponents most of those additional attacks won't *hit*. In other words they are USELESS against all but low-level mob's. Worse still, most builds will further hamstring the builds ability to *hit* with medium BAB builds. And it isn't just the medium BAB itself, but also switching to another medium BAB which further reduces your net BAB. This means that against the toughest AC opponents you might not be able to hit it *at all*.

Extra attacks at low attack numbers *is* useful against low-level mobs, so it isn't a worthless feature. BUT you can actually obtain a better "kill-average" by using the "cleaves" as an alternative to extra attacks.

IMO Improved Two Weapon Fighting is enough. But if you want to go the high dexterity route then by all means get as many of the Two-Weapon feats as you can, but don't expect a lot.

This effectively means you are looking at a Strength OR Dexterity based build with Charisma that is at least 10 (before any "buffing" extras).

..More to follow. ;)

This leads me to:

The build will have 5 levels of Invisible Blade.

and alternatively:

1. The build will have 10 or more levels of Rogue (to get Crippling Strike for Epic Precision latter), OR

2. The build will have only moderate Sneak Attack Damage and will likely have Strength as its primary attribute.

This still leaves a variety of builds, but the single greatest variable is the build's BAB and net attack numbers.

Route #1 Rogue:

25 Rogue/5 Invisible Blade; Major Attribute Dexterity. Excellent Sneak Attack Damage, with poor attack numbers and only high AC levels at high character levels. Poor against critically immune opponents until Epic Precision is obtained at character level 21 at the earliest.

Route #2 Mixed Rogue:

Rogue 10/Fighter 5/Invisible Blade 5/Blackguard 10; Major Attribute Strength. Good Sneak Attack Damage, with mediocre attack numbers and mediocre AC. Mediocre against critically immune opponents throughout.

Route #3 High BAB Sneak Attack:

Fighter 12/Blackguard 10/Invisible Blade 5/Neverwinter Nine 3; Major Attribute Strength. Mediocre Sneak Attack Damage, with good attack numbers and mediocre AC. Good against critically immune opponents throughout.

Of the 3 paths above I'd opt for the 3rd principally for the higher attack number. ;)

Again, just remember that *if* you go with a "strength-based" build that you should stop at Improved Two Weapon Fighting, and should select Able Learner early-on.
