Am I geek?
Am I geek?
A funny thing happened to me the other day: The "alternative rock" band Weezer came out with a video that made me reconsider my status. They threw together every internet-character from the start o f the net, and made a fantasic video out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muP9eH2p2PI The point is, I KNOW EVERY ONE OF THESE INTERNET CHARACTERS!... and my 28 year old friend, who has a degree in IT, doesn't know the Numa-Numa man. Who is the geek?

I don't understand anything. I watched the video, and I don't even know what you talking about. "Internet characters"? Are the characters depicted in the video typical internet stereotypes? Or are they related to stuff that has circulated on internet for a long time so "everybody" should be familiar with it? And what on earth is "numa-numa"? A traditional polynesian dish?Moonbiter wrote:The point is, I KNOW EVERY ONE OF THESE INTERNET CHARACTERS!... and my 28 year old friend, who has a degree in IT, doesn't know the Numa-Numa man. In any case, my conclusion is that both you and your IT-friend must be complete geeks.

Numa Numa is this fat kid with a big pair of headphones on that recorded himself doing an extremely embarrassing computer sit-down dance of the song "Numa Numa."
Other internet characters include Shocking Look Gopher, Leave Britney Alone girl, Chocolate Rain, The Diet Coke and Mentos experiment, and so on. Basically, all of them are people who recorded themselves doing stupid stuff and put it on youtube (Numa Numa appeared long before youtube actually, but it made it there nonetheless).
And I must be a geek too, I recognized every last character.
Now are the people playing their famous internet characters the original actual people who did it, or people who just look extremely like them?

It's the real people, which I find absolutely fascinating. the director actually asked them to do it, and the only one who said no was the Star Wars Kid. CE, these people are internet superstars. I can't believe you haven't seen at least one of them. They're everywhere!

I think Weezer already counts as geek-rock per definition. Do you wear glasses also?Moonbiter wrote:Weezer came out with a video that made me reconsider my status.

Thanks for the information Sib. I have never heard of any of these. I think you are all geeksSiberys wrote:Numa Numa is this fat kid with a big pair of headphones on that recorded himself doing an extremely embarrassing computer sit-down dance of the song "Numa Numa."

And this finally proves that you are indeed a geek They're everywhere? I have certainly not seen any of them on Pubmed, on the websites of any of the scientific journals, on the major news networks or the Karolinska or UCLA websites.Moonbiter wrote:CE, these people are internet superstars. Considerably more than the limited world that is the internet. For instance, you can travel the world and observe and interact with all aspects of other cultures and interact with people IRL which allows for contact at all levels.Siberys wrote:The internet is a universe of it's own. Get out where? What I find disturbing is that a vid like the Numa Numa dance has been viewed 700 million times as of January 2008, and some people have managed to miss it. "Getting out" must mean living in a cave in Borneo.:laugh:dragon wench wrote:I kind of share the sentiments here....

Certifiable, and proud of it! The world would be a poorer place without internet-nutcases to entertain me. :laugh:C Elegans wrote:Good, then you're only a geek, not a disturbed geek

I had a rather perplexed look on me face as I watched the music video. Me head slightly tilted to the right while trying to remember what the abbreviations WTF and WTH stood for, once again. Nonetheless, I did recognise few of those references and I can verify - albeit little late -that ‘numa-numa‘ is not a traditional Polynesian dish. Originally it was a song called Dragostea Din Tei by Moldovan boy band called O-zone. The song made it’s internet debut as the ‘numa-numa‘ dance few years later as Siberys explained it.C Elegans wrote:I don't understand anything. In any case, my conclusion is that both you and your IT-friend must be complete geeks.
And if someone shows somewhat questionable curiosity towards the original music video, you can find it by clicking the link here: YouTube - OZONE - dragostea din tea
However, I do not think the music video created by Weezer and friends can be used to define whether someone falls under the category of a geek or not - as it performs much better at defining the sites people might be visiting. For example I do find it rather unlikely to find a clip of “Chocolate Rain” on the UCLA websites, where such find would be more likely on a website which offers a possibility to watch flash based user submitted videos for your own personal leisure and taste.
Of course I do not deny how ’numa-numa’ dance couldn’t have something to do with the second king of Rome, friend of Pythagoras etc. Well, stuff of legends, right Boo?
