I made a BG2 game recently and I want to have a good party, which of course includes a good thief.
I think Imoen, Yoshino and Nalia are the thieves. Imoen and Yoshino are good but Imoen got taken and if memory serves Yoshino turns out to be a dickwad.
Is Nalia mainly a mage? Is Imoen mainly a mage? Are either of them decent thieves?
Just to clear things up the only skills I care about are: Detect Trap, Pick Lock and possibly some Detect Illusion as an extra. (I have Haer'Dalis to do the pickpocketing)

Well both Imoen and Nalia are primarily mages, so you will never raise their thiefskills.
Yoshimo is a great thief, and so is Jan Jansen. However, Yoshimo has a part to play in the main quest just like Imoen.
You don't need great thief skills, just buy lots of Potion of Perception and Potion of Master Thievery for those pesky times when the skill isn't high enough.

Jan Jansen is the best thief for late SoA. Imoen will do for what you're asking (and she's a good enough Mage to cast "True Sight" if you want).
Using Yoshimo is your best bet, IMHO.

With that requirement the choice is pretty easyt to me, Jan.

If your talking about NPC wise-then it is Yoshimo, or maybe Jan. But to be perfectly honest, there really are no good thieves in the game. You should just make your own. And if the question was which thief class is the best, then the answer is Bounty Hunter, hands down.
