Paladin getting his butt handed to him

Post by Coot »

I'm not really new at this game so I'm a bit annoyed as to why my paladin's performance is so bad. He gets hurt and wounded by almost any opponent.

I realised he'd get the most lumps when i created my party, because he's my main (and admittedly many times my only) melee character but I didn't think he'd need help and healing this much.
I'm not sure where I went wrong: he's got 19/58 STR, 18 DEX and 18 CON. He's got a belt that puts the Blur spell on him, permanently and his AC is -13. Still, he gets wounded even by opponents with normal weapons!
My F/T has an AC of only -5 and he does much better. He also gets a load more kills.
What do you think? Can my pally improve or should I leave him as dinner for the next troll?

Its because he is drawing the agro. If you did not have him then the next character (who drew agro) would have the same problem.
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

The thing that confuses me is that even with an AC of -13 and, on top of that, many buffs (Blur, Protection from evil, Barkskin and others), he still gets wopped by enemies who use normal weapons.
Is there any way to make him more resistant to injury?

It's possible to improve your paladin's AC considerably.
But AC of -13 already forces enemies with a thac0 of 7 or worse (that's nearly all enemies) to score a critical in order to be able hit him.

Considering only 1 of 20 enemy attacks hit and your paladin still gets hit a lot the question is why does he get attacked so often ?
Why do enemies survive that long ? Is your tactic to run your paladin into the middle of enemy armies and just let the monsters surround and attack him from all directions until they die of exhaustion ?

I don't think replacing the paladin with another class will solve your problems. A paladin should even be able to solo the game without too much trouble.

The easiest way to take preasure away from your frontliners is using summons.

I've a party of five (bard, f/t, druid, cleric and pally). Enemies don't really live that long, I think, but often long enough to do my paladin harm. While it's true that he is the main tank (and therefore draws the most fire), he is supported heavily by ranged weapons and spells from the other party members.
Although I'm not an expert player I'm not new to IWD and BG. I got through SoA and ToB with Mazzy as my only tank. That's why I'm stumped. It's not only that my paladin gets bopped on the head so often, he gets less kills than my f/t and even my cleric.

IWD isn't easy mainstream entertainment like BG2, so you have to adjust your tactics.

I guess the main reason for the paladin's offensive weakness are the weapons your paladin uses. Melee weapons don't allow to attack as fast as slings or bows.
If you want him to do more damage use the strength spell and DUHM spell.

I'll adjust my tactics, like you said. In IWD (especially with the expansion) druids get a whole lot of offensive spells which I haven't been using all that much. I also found out that those different bardsongs really make a difference.
Thanks for your replies :)

I agree with you, my pally had -10 AC and my fighter has -6 AC and my fighter can take much more enemies then my pally IMO
