Spoiler?: professor quest game-stopper

Post by brxbrx »

I'm playing the game a second time as a Gangrel male.
After I've retrieved the sarcophagus, I go back to Lacroix. Yada yada yada, he wants to open it. I talk to Beckett, he asks me if I'm struggling with Protean (I already have Protean 5)- the only dialogue option is "I don't have a good answer to that" (or something close). Abrubtly, dialogue ends. The Society... Professor quest is logged, but I can't access the monastery from the sewers or the cab- it simply doesn't appear on the map. I go back to the tower, and I can't talk to Beckett, and when I talk to Lacroix, he simply stands still while my character moves to the sarcophagus, where normally he'd start badgering Beckett, making an unending cutscene, with me and Beckett standing around the sarcophagus.
I tried reloading, and this time, Lacroix doesn't move and the professor quest isn't logged (I tried lots of reloading, from even earlier saves: same thing).
So, I installed the fanmade 5.6 patch (I already had 1.2). I try once more, and when I talk to the prince, he gives me the hollywood/nosferatu quest, which I'd already completed.
I reinstall the game, try again; same, unmoving Lacroix with neverendng cutscene.
Please help me, this is one of my favorite games. Someone tell me a console function, a workaround, or some fan fix.
Thank you all very much.

The LaCroix bug almost killed my game many times. In the console, all you have to do is type "G.Story_State". With the patch, before you talk to LaCroix before the Society quest is given, it should say 65 (or 70, sorry, can't remember). All you have to do is type in "G.Story_State = 60" (syntax may be slightly different). Now quicksave, and talk to LaCroix. If he still gives you the "Folly of Leadership" crap, reload and try another number (usually a multiple of 5) between 60 and 70 (inclusive) until you get the "My hero!"-type speach, where he praises you in something like German.

That should help you out.

Thank you so much! Now I just have to remember how to use the console...
(don't bother telling me, I've done it before, I'll figure it out again)- thanks again!

uum... It would appear I have no save files from before I got the quest.
Thus when I tried the console thing you gave me, the same thing happened (me walking to the sarcophagus and Lacroix just standing there).
Does it matter that I have the quest activated (you said it did...)?
If so, do you have another way way?
If not, do I have to start form the Fu synidcate again?
Thank you again.

I'm sure there's some sorta way to teleport yourself to where you need to get to (or back to), unfortunately I don't know the codes that well... Again, I don't know if this will work, but you could just try to skip the Professor quest altogether (if you want), and just set the Story_State to 70... but if you're stuck in that loop, I don't know how effective that would be.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

Hm, as much as I hate telling you this... but installing the Unofficial Patch probably has screwed your current game. You should always start a new game before using a new patch (why doesn't anybody ever read readmes... the name should be intuitive enough) - what you can try is backing up your saves, un- and reinstalling the game and patch 1.2. That might work, not sure, though. Wesp5 should be able to tell you more.
"While sanity provides a comfortable perspective of the universe, only through its absence one will be given a glimpse at what might lie beyond.
The question remains, though - Does insight remove sanity, or will insight be given to the mad?"

That is what I tried. I'm thinking of starting much earlier, or starting a new game altogether. I was growing rather found of this character though.

Oh, and the game was screwed up before I installed the patch. I just wanted to see if the patch fixed it.

But thank you very much anyways, any help is much appreciated.

If you reload from a saved game outside the Society of Leopold after patching the transition should work.

Well, I installed the patch (after reinstalling the game with 1.2 and trying everything) again, but the problem persists, even with the console option-
Lacroix does not move towards the sarcophagus or talk, and Beckett does not talk.
Quick summary:
I have no recent saved game without the Society quest, and I have no way of getting there, not by taxi or sewer.
If someone knew how I could teleport there, that'd be great.
Thank you anyways.
