You can get the rope by three ways:

1)either by siding with a mad king and killing the prince - the king gives it to you as a reward
2)or by siding with a prince and killing the king - the prince gives it to you as a reward
3)or by killing both of them, these way I got even two ropes.Immediately when I reached the Sahuagin city, I behaved aggressively towards them and they all attacked me, so I got first rope from King's treasury (I think or was it from King himself) and the second one from prince's corpse

However, if you're playing for the first time I wouldn't recommend the 3rd way because it's the less interesting, I played it only when I played the game over and over for many times and my main character was chaotic evil in alignment.

Choosing from the three ways described to get the rope, I guess that the first one(siding with the King and killing the Prince) is most profitable: this way you'll get the Gauntlets of Crushing (reward from the king) and the Wave Blade from the corpse of the prince. Besides, you can pickpocket the key to the treasury in advance from the King, and loot it as well.

Actually option three is the most profitable, of course lawful types shouldn't go there! :D

I think you don't get the rope directly as a reward, but the King gives you a Treasury key and the rope is in the treasury.

There is the fact, that by not completing either of the quests, you will not get the huge quest xp reward (58 500 xp in the case you support the King, and 60 500 xp in the case you support the Prince). Besides, the Gauntlets of Crushing will not be found on the body of the King if you just slay him - you will have to follow the quest line and kill the prince if you want them.

Good point about the XP Saros, I was only thinking money!

Hang on, I've just woken up, you get the XP as well anyway Saros, it's not an either/or thing, complete the king's quest, then kill the king and all remaining Sahuagin. At least that's what I do.

PS Just been there again, and the last paragraph is incorrect, god knows what was in that baccy I've been smoking! It should have been side with the Prince, then kill him, and everyone else after getting the reward.
