I've been through the game already, and for my second time through I chose to go with a cleric/rogue and a monk/sorcerer. My problem is that I'm having trouble distinguishing between acceptable items for my monk and unacceptable items. For example, is a ring really considered armour? And if I (hypothetically) have already equipped armour, does that mean that I automatically lose some of the monk perks, or I have time to take it off before I lose the perks?
If anyone experienced with using a monk could help me clear up these grey areas that would be great. Thanks a lot

The only items that are considered as armor for a monk are shields (and tomes that go into your shield slot) and any item that goes into the armor slot.

Basically, the only items with "Armor" in it's name (Padded armor, leather armor, chainmail armor, full plate armor, etc) are considered armor. If it doesn't have the name armor actually in it, look for terms like Armor Check Penalty or Maximum Dexterity Bonus. Dead giveaways. Those will cause a monk to lose his Monk AC bonus and Wisdom to AC bonus.
Gauntlets, Rings, Belts, Headbands, vests, robes, amulets, boots, gloves, bracelets, and just about every other item without the aforementioned do not make a monk lose his abilities.
