I am still undecided about what to choose as my next character for soloing through SOA and TOB.
I want to take some sort of thief but I cannot decide between Fighter/Thief, Kensai/Thief or Swashbuckler.
Any suggestions?
BTW, can thief use a staff for backstabbing? I tried to use s Staff of Magi for backstabbing with Jan but it was not working...
What to choose?

I just finished a game with a kensai 25/ thief 27. Must say that this was the easyest ever. Comparable perhaps only to monk. But then again I love monks. By the end his thac0 was so low he actually backstabbed. Without any use of the shadow keeper i rolled the dice until I had:
strenght: 18, by the end 23
dexterity: 17, by the end 19
constitution: 17, by the end 21
inteligence: 16, by the end 18
wisdom: 15, by the end 19
charisma: 3, by the end 25 (you all know how, but I don't consider it major cheating)
Yes I am a power hungry man. But I also played just as to see what is the max attribute score I could get. This character is the closest to Godlike I had ever created. I had 5 stars in katanas, 3 in dual, 5 in quarterstaff and not sure how many but some in flails for DoE.
He was probably the most versatile character too. He could be equipped with DoE, Jansen armor and hardiness for damage reduction, or any other items that give bonus to AC ( I never had to lower it to the max wit using spec. items, -15 was enough for my needs), or I gave him magic protection items. The only bad part was that he had only 2 spike traps, asassination and UAI from thief HLA pool.
I highly recomend playing this build if you are a powergamer, otherwise you might think it's game destroying. I've played this character trough BG1 and tales of the Sword coast, BG2:SoA and BG2:ToB. He killed by the hundreds and I couldn't get rid of the feeling that the two NPC with me were balast. He was almost soloing. I had edwin and viccy with me in the end. There never was a need for them. It was all over before there would be an actual need for them.
