Hilarious Time - Chessboard and Aec'Letec

Post by drktmplar »

I've never made it to the actual city of Baldur's Gate, nor even begun TotSC content.

Chessboard:
Well, I arrived at the Chessboard. Now, I'm a solo sorcerer (Tutu), but after the cap, I let some people into my party, although I just leave them in a corner and do my own fighting...

So, I'm reading the Chessboard "rules," and just to be safe, invis myself and cast MI just in case I set off some lightening. Leaving my party where they are, I charge forward to see what's ahead. Lo and behold, there's a whole hoard of guys just waiting to kill...
I consider using my party to help out, but as I start getting zapped by lightning, a bulb goes off in my head: I dig out a potion of absorption, drink it, and start running back and forth. Soon enough, lightning's flying everywhere killing everyone. I try to huddle my party into a corner, hoping that they won't get hurt much...but by the time all the baddies are dead, my entire party's been wiped out as well.

Oh well...lol.

Aec'Letec:
I can't believe how tough this demon is...how the hell can I solo this guy without any decent summons??
After 4 reloads, I start wondering if there isn't some item or potion that would boost my saves. Potions of Magic Blocking or Shielding aren't protecting me at all (wth!), but then I remember that I had found a polymorph self scroll somewhere...and I remembered how it was impossible to cast spells on Mustard Jellies...
Well, a cast of polymorph and one Cloudkill later, Aec'Letec has died about seven times in 30 seconds. That's got to be some kind of record...and what a waste of disciples... :P

I wonder if I could work something out with Oltik's (sp) Resilient Sphere... ;)

That chessboard game sounds hilarious. Good thinking!

The Aec Laetec battle reminds me somewahat of the first time i played it with a solo mage (vanilla so some things might be different) I used invisibility to get past the frontman and used my sling to kill of the other acolytes. They just let me kill them! Then, taking note of the instruction to kill them before they could complete the ritual, I used cloudkill to kill the last one. Problem was, killing him before you speak to him fouls up the quest. No soultaker!! No end of quest despite having suceeded. That didn't seem fair!
Next time through I killed the acolytes, cast cloudkill and before the frontman died, spoke to him thus triggering Aec coming to life and he died immediately, no multiple deaths though so presumably no multiple experience.

That's a great tactic. Unfortunately, even if the acolytes turn into Aec'Latec, you only get 16,000 xp once. :( That's alright though, solo mages hardly need the experience.

I'm curious, though, as to how other people dealt with the situation as a solo mage/sorcerer?
I always feel like spells like Cloudkill are cheesy as hell. Honestly, though, if I didn't have Cloudkill + Polymorph: Mustard Jelly, I don't know how I would have done, short of your strategy.

Another question, how can a solo sorcerer overcome Werewolf Island?

It's good I had a party to keep me company. When I realized how magic resistant everyone was, I just decided to give that Wolfbane amulet and anti-regeneration sword to Coran. A lot of buffing up and monster summons later, Coran and I stormed the Balduraan shipwreck with little problem.

Thanks for any input,

What can I say? I like pets...

So, I finally entered the Iron Throne...
Do you remember that Staff of Polymorph you get for killing those boogeymen...?

Well, maybe it was a bad idea for the dev's to give it to me...:

Think I'll just leave 'em like that.

And yes, Gardush is still saying, "Fear my wrath, for it is great indeed!"

There is the silver dagger of course. I think that as a solo you would have to lure them outside and deal with them one at a time. You are playing Tutu presumably so that isn't a problem. I think that it wouold be a long battle of attrition. Take lots of magical bullets and darts. Buff yourself up. I know that fire works pretty well but I haven't done it with Tutu so I don't know what changes have been made.
