A lot will depend on the character you are using. Of course soloing you tend to be at a higher level so you have more spells available. A berserker/druid could use his enrage to avoid fear and use insect swarm to prevent the dragon casting its own spells in addition summoning spells keep the dragon busy whilst you are using other spells. A mage would use spells that remove protections and also use summoning spells. Spells such as mislead can be useful as can true sight if the dragon tries to fool you. Haste is invaluable if you haven't got the boots of speed. Don't forget that running away and coming back again when the dragons protective spells have worn off is a very effective tactic. There are also some exploits which I won't mention as it could spoil your enjoyment.

There are a few things worth considering when you're facing a Dragon:
First of all - each and every dragon shoots the following spells in the beginning of the combat:
Stoneskin
Remove Magic
Dragon Fear(innate ability)
Lower Elemental Resistance(elemental means, that if you face a red dragon, he will lower your Fire resistance, the silver dragon will lower your Cold resistance, etc.)
Dragon Breath + Wing Buffet(often, not always)
A dragon's Remove Magic is of high enough level so that it will always be successful. Thus, you may either send in front ONE character(or better, a summon) to absorb the Remove Magic, or send in a protected from Remove magic buffed spellcaster - meaning, a spellcaster protected with Spell Immunity Abjuration on top of all his other protections.
Against Dragon Fear, there are some items and potions granting immunity, but not much. Such items are Potions of Clarity, the Dragonslayer Sword, the Blackrazor, and the Nymph cloak, the last two found only in Hell, only if you take the evil road. But there is a simple, low level, mage/cleric spell called Resist/Remove fear, which should be cast on your entire party BEFORE battling a dragon.
VS a Dragon breath, you oughtta know what kind of breath it is. Red dragons, of course, breathe fire, so protect your party from Fire, there are plenty of spells/items/potions/scrolls for that. A Shadow Dragon's breath doesn't do damage, but it it Blinding as well as Level Draining, so make sure you attack the Shadow dragon only under the protection of certain rare items such as the Amulet of Power or Improved Mace of Disruption, which grant permanent Level drain protection. There is a clerical spell doing that too, but a very short-lasting one, unfortunately. Silver dragons breathe Cold, Green Dragons breathe Poison, a blue's dragon breath deals Lightning damage, and Brown dragon's breath is acidic.
There is no protection vs a Wing Buffet, not unless you apply some mods that is.
After resisting successfully the first Dragon assault, be prepared(in SoA) for some kind of Enchantment school spell (hold person, chaos, dominate, etc). Chaotic commands/Shield of Harmony should be enough protection in this case.
Dragons love to buff themselves with at least Stoneskin and Haste. Dispel those buffs(and more) either with an item (Staff of the Magi, Carsomyr), or a spell(breach, dispel magic, remove magic). Do keep in mind that while Breach is always successful, Dispel/remove magic depend on your level. But Keldorn will always be successful, because his Dispel magic is cast at 2*his levels strength. Just be careful not to dispel your own buffs this way...
The Dragonslayer sword is indeed the greatest weapon for slaying dragons. It grants permanent Fear immunity and deals 2*damage vs dragons.
Killing a dragon with spells is easy enough if you first Lower his magical resistance with spells like Lower resistance.
Killing a SoA dragon with many traps is even easier, since they don't turn hostile while you lay traps around them.
Summoning a special kind of meat shield is sometimes battle-decisive. For instance, try summoning 3-4 Fire Elementals vs Firkraag...

Common and (not the only solo) options are mages and mage kits. Many youtube videos contain fighter/mage/thieves which I personally think isn't that impressive.
Something I find funny is soloers with monks who use quivering palm to one shot kill dragons.
Easiest way to kill a dragon is imprison.

Warning: logic and sense is replaced by typos and errors after 11pm
Spoiler
, it has yet to return
Mages can easily best any enemy, but the other kits have their chances too.Deadalready wrote:Common and (not the only solo) options are mages and mage kits. Many youtube videos contain fighter/mage/thieves which I personally think isn't that impressive.

Quivering palm is great vs SoA dragons, but in ToB, especially with the Ascension mod, there are a lot of enemies immune to Vorpal effects like Quivering palm, including all dragons.
ToB dragons are also immune vs Imprisonment.
Shadow Dragon turned to dust.
How to kill the Shadow Dragon: 1) spells and 2) way to avoid level drain.
1) Build: Solo Sorcerer, lvl 13.
At the very least, keep up Stoneskin and Mirror Image.
Lower resistances two or three times. Greater Malison, Glitterdust. Throw a Chromatic Orb, and poof! Dragon's gone and you didn't even have to break out disintegrate or FoD.
2) Avoiding level drain.
It's the Shadow Dragon's breath that drains your level. I realized that he usually does it when there's a good amount of distance between you and the dragon. I also realized that it only works if you're in the dragon's line of sight.
When the dragon uses Wing Buffet, let it push you across the room out of LoS of the dragon. When the dragon uses his breath, you won't be affected. When the dragon comes to melee, move to the other side of the dragon so that he is between you and the wall. This way, the next time he uses Wing Buffet, you'll be thrown clear across the room, safe from his breath weapon. Rinse, repeat.
Maybe this sort of tactic will work for other dragons?
