Non-fantasy RPG?

Are there any decent "sci-fi"/non-fantasy RPGs on PC out there?
I've played Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: Tactics, Hellgate: London and Arcanum, allthough Arcanum is a bordercase.

Do you know of any others that are worth a try?

P.S.: I'll ignore every mention of Fallout 3 as a suggestion.

Wasteland? It's the original that led, many years later, to Fallout, with a couple of the same team members. Planet's Edge was another, from the folks at New World Computing, in 1991. Then there's Star Control 2, which mixes elements of adventure, arcade, and RPG (though you can remove the arcade element easily enough). Great game. All are abandonware, too.

Wasteland requires DosBox, which I am notoriously incompatible with. I really tried to, but the thing never wants to work.

Great suggestion, though.
Same goes for Planet's Edge, I guess.
I'll check out Star Control. Off to the Underdogs!

Sure thing. Sorry to hear about your problems with DOSbox. As for Star Control 2, try The Ur-Quan Masters for a version that's been retooled for more recent computers.

I haven't tried the KOTOR series but that seems sci-fi to me and I want to try them eventually. They are by BIOWARE 1 and OBSIDIAN 2 I believe if you like those makers.

Deus Ex is a pretty good game. It's in the top list of many people. I did not like it at first, but that was because I tried to kill every enemy. Once I realized you don't gain experience by killing enemies and adopted a more stealthy approach, I was also convinced.

There is also Anachronox. It is a fun game that plays like the Final Fantasy games. I prefered it over the Final Fantasies because it's more mature. It has a dark humour.

You can also look at the Freedom Force games. I have not played them yet, but they are supposed to be good.

There is also Silent Storm, but I have not played it either.

I can think of a few other titles, but they require DosBox. What is your problem with DosBox by the way? I tried to avoid using it at first because it looked complicated, but once I understood, I realized it was, in fact, very easy. I just played Wizardry VI with it and apart from freezing at least once a day, I did not have any other problem with it.

Another one to check out: Microplay's Bloodnet, from 1993. I remember finding it interesting, though the combat was difficult. Also SSI's
Skyrealms of Jorune: Alien Logic. Great game, with some unusual features.

It does not detect mine either, but most of the old games don't require the CD to play. You just need to copy the files on your hard drive, than you "mount" the folder (the DosBox instructions tells you that you mount the hardware, but in fact you mount the folder). For example, when I played Wizardry VI, the CD installed the files in a folder named Bane. To play the game, I just had to type:

mount c c:\bane (typed on the same line, then pressed enter)

(then I typed)

c: (to switch from z: to c:, then pressed enter)

(it switched to c)

(then I typed)

Bane

(and the game started).

Just replace "Bane" with the name of your folder and it should work. You have to remount the folder every time you want to play. Not a big deal since it's only 3 steps. To switch to Fullscreen, just press alt+enter. When you're done playing, you just need to type "exit" to close DosBox.

I am not a PC expert, but I hope this can help.

You're welcome.

If you use DosBox, you may also consider System Shock and System Shock 2.

As for games played on Windows, I also forgot the Vampire The Masquerade games, Redemption and Bloodlines. Redemption starts as a fantasy game, but switches to modern times at some point.

I played the original Freedom Force a few years ago. Back in '01 or '02, I think. Not bad, though it is a bit frustrating when it comes to managing your team members. It's still fun nonetheless.

P.S. Don't confuse this with Freedom Fighters, a completely unrelated game.
