Just got back from Underdark and am on the quest for Rynn Lanthorn. However, when I head back to Athkatla I am quickly beset upon by some Githyanki and an Anti-Paladin. They demand the blade of the Silver Sword which I am of course unwilling to give them.
Once I start the fight (even if I don't cast spells and they do) the Cowled Enforcers dimension door in and turn hostile on me. So it really makes no sense not to use spells. The problem is...I am having a *very* tough time with this fight as the Githyanki are spread out in groups, the Anti-Paladin is tough, I am getting stunned or power word sleep'd and wiped out very quickly.
Well, you may easily solve your 'Cowled Wizard' problem.
Just go to the Government district and pay the wizard inside 5000 gold for spellcasting license, thus being able to cast spells on the streets.
If you don't want to do this, go to the Graveyard right away, complete it (kill Bodhi) - Githyanki will not appear there, rest, buff well, and travel to another city area, facing the Githyanki - at least this way you will have all of your protective buffs active, being really easy to defeat both the Githyanki and the Cowled Enforcers which appear when spellcasting.
It would help if we knew your party composition. Are you mostly magic users, or are there enough fighters on hand to defend your backline? The problem with the Githyanki (and I'm reaching way back in the memories here) was that they go invisible and fan out. Remember, you can use Priest spells freely in the city streets, so those useful debufs that we can easily forget about (Dispel Magic in comes to mind) are good to go. Protection From Evil, Defensive Harmony, Iron Skin (Druid) are pretty much all go. Insect Swarm is also useful for disrupting the buggers while simultaneously doing damage if it's available to you.
I remember being able to muscle through with Valygar/Anomen/Jaheira/Aerie/Imoen/Thief. Stoneskin/Defense/Giant Strength potions can provide boosts if you can't cast magic. Unless you're using AI scripts that send your fighters running off every which way, turn off your Scripts and manually hold back your warriors to guard the softies. Or you can have your weakest people "run" away to a safe place while the meat of the operation wait out the Githyanki to attack, exposing them.

Thanks for the replies. I decided after many attempts that I was too weak to take on the Cowled Wizards and the Githyanki at the same time. Just wasn't working.
So I paid the $5k gold and got a magic license. The battle was easy after that.
