How the hell do you defeat these things. My sword has no effect on them. Can't pick locks well enuff to get the glow dust from the mage guild basement, and i doubt i have the majicka to flare them to death.

Buy a silver weapon, any kind will do even if it's not in the category of your major skills. Silver is what affects ethereal creatures (such as Will-o-wisps, and ghosts/wraiths).

Or a weapon that has any sort of enchantment on it.

Any silver, daedric (i think), or enchanted weapon will work even if it has no charge left. Also any spells will work and the Blade of Woe is as far as I know the only non-enchanted, non silver or daedric weapon that still hurts ghost-like creatures. (Last resort weapon at best)

try the area south of Bravil, there you should find them if you have the right level (best chance between L12 - L20)

Killing a Wil-o-the wisp

If you don't have enough money, you could always steal a scroll of magic or use and enchanted item, or steal something silver to hit it with.

There are only three generic unenchanted weapon types that can be used to kill Will-o-the-Wisps: Silver, Dremora, Daedric.

However, you can use spells to kill it, but it seems you don't have the magicka required to cast this many times.

For now, you can just buy one from Ogier Georick in the Main Ingredient (IC Market District)

You don't really need to steal silver weapons, just join the Mage's Guild, and you have silver weapons available to you. Or you can get enough money to get silver weapons. It's better than stealing.

Becomes a Journeyman in Hand to Hand, and you're ready to go. You'll need more power though, either defensive (Reflect Spell), or offensive (you know what)
Don't face it unprepared, or you'll be absorbed 'till stone dead

Blade Of Woe Spoiler?!

Howdy, Arok 2092!

According to the Night Mother,
Spoiler
the Blade Of Woe is enchanted and you simply didn't know how to "unlock it", so she does it for you as a part of your reward for becoming her new Listener. (Similiar to that amulet that requires the magical password to use it properly in that other quest, "A Brotherhood Betrayed".) I for one recall being amazed at how amazing my little, new Blade Of Woe ("of"?) was at killing things easily, and then when she told me what it was for real, I was like, "Oh, no wonder!" :p
Shhh! Be very quiet! I may be sleep writing and sleep reading!
