I'm having a problem with IWD: Heart of Winter.

Post by metalslinger »

Hello. I recently bought the European version of the Icewind Dale collection. I already had the original IWD, so I only installed the expansion, Heart of Winter. Anyway, the installation went fine, and my characters were exported over to the expansion. I started a new game in the expansion and loaded my characters, then I got the screen that said that I needed to put disc 3 into the drive. I did, but it would not read the disc. I checked to see if the CD3 disc was on the cd, and it was. I had this same problem with Baldur's Gate: ToTSC with CD6. How do I fix this?

Thanks. :)

I'd uninstall the game, back-up the character files, delete the folder and reinstall everything from scratch, only using the collection.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'll post again if it doesn't work.

Okay, I just tried what you told me to do, and it still isn't reading the disc. I had the same problem with ToTSC for Baldur's Gate, and I was using the original releases with those two. :)

Maybe if you told us more about your system it might help too? I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but it's a thought anyway.

Age of machine?
Processor?
Graphics card?
Operating System?

etc.

I have a Gateway Laptop. The OS is Window's Vista. The processor is an Athlon X2 64 processor. The graphic's card is a nividia something, I'll have to turn it on tomorrow (I'm currently on my mother's computer). The machine is a little over a year old. I've been having problems with video games since I've gotten it, though.

This isn't absolute truth, but me thinks that the problem is Windows Vista. The older games tend to get lots of problems in Vista, so wouldn't wonder if this was one of such.

One thing you could test (if possible) to rule out either computer related problems or cd related problem: Install the game to other computer (preferrably with WinXP, if possible) and import the characters from your laptop and see if the problem persists. If it does, the it's most likely that problem is with the cd (unless the other computer has Vista, in which case the problem still could be Vista related), and if the game runs fine then it's computer related.

As your computer is very good, and haven't heard any problems of running IWD in recent computers with WinXP, I seriously think this problem is related to Vista. And as you said yourself, you have had lots of problems with games since you got the laptop.
