Playing Win95/98 games in Vista
Playing Win95/98 games in Vista
I'm running Vista Home 64bit, and I want to play my old Heavy Gear 1 again. It installs on Vista, but as soon as a mission launches, it crashes to desktop. I tried using compatibility mode.
So, which way would you recommend to play old games on Vista? Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 says that Vista isn't compatible. I also doubt that Heavy Gear 1 runs in DOS, hence DoxBox is out as well.
Thanks in advance!

You're just asking for trouble. Well, you might want to try the Windows distribution of Wine. Wine is sort of the main tool that allows Linux users to run Windows programs. I was pretty surprised as well to learn that there was a Windows distribution of Wine as well.

Maybe it works. You'll have to do your homework though. And none of that 64bit stuff.

On that: WineHQ - World Wine News
Give it a few months. It is by the way completely legal if you had any doubts about that at all. Wine code gets 'confirmed' by Microsoft to check if it is not a direct copy of their own API. Or something to that effect, I don't know the details.

Is the game known under a different name (EU/US release)? I can't find a maintainer page for it on Wine AppDB. I find that odd because I thought it used to be a pretty well known game. It's sort of a big library where people submit their experiences about how well specific programs run on Wine.

Weird. Well, most 95/98 games will do well on Wine whether or not they have a page. It's not abandonware, is it? I could check and make a page for it myself.

Ok - I misunderstood you.GawainBS wrote:Activision is anything but dead and as far as I know, quite keen on its copyrights. Hence the comment. I tried to imply that it certainly isn't abandonware.
Usually the argument for abandonware is that when the original company is gone, "everybody" thinks it is abaondonware .... hence my response
