I'm trying to clear out one of the estates in the Blacklake district, but I made a bit of a mess. I had to retreat with about six to eight Noble Guards on my tail. They are waiting for me right at the entry. They're not particularly difficult to deal with, but they outnumber my weak character.
I don't use NPC party members other than summons. I have two levels of Anti-Paladin (PRC) and three levels of Sorcerer with a spell focus on Evocation. The Anti-Pally levels and the resulting XP penalty have caused me to lag behind on general combat prowess. I would normally be at a much higher caster level as well, I'm still conjuring dire badgers where a singleclass wizard would have had dire wolves at his disposal. I have to retreat a lot.
My +1 sickle and reduced hit-die allow me to just about take on easy to medium opponents in one-on-one combat, but for groups I need to summon a distraction so I can start pelting the others with my crossbow (I have a slight dex bonus in my build, so I don't completely suck with that). But since the Noble guards have clogged up the foyer, I can't get past them without being 'Attack of Opportunity'-ed to death within seconds.
So I'm about 1K experience away from a levelling up. The very first level two spells are going to become available to me when I do. What would be a good choice of spell to mow down that group of guards? I can't really decide, especially since my Sorcerer sort of has to make do with these spells in other situations as well and I don't want to drift too much off character.
I could get invisibility for this next idea, but I don't like the idea of selecting a non-focussed spell *just* for this specific problem. While outside I can summon a creature, cast invisibility on myself, enter the estate, watch the summon damage some guards and exit without drawing any attention. Rinse and repeat. But even if it works and they don't detect me before the spell runs out, it's still kind of a munchkin solution, one that I'd rather not have to rely on during the next few character levels.
I could certainly use a better idea.
Tough spot.

I managed to get past them at character level 6 with the boar. It drives me crazy though, the boar and the badger always stand around for a few moments doing nothing. They cast some racial ability if they see an enemy, yes, but I have the feeling this takes two turns rather than one. Powerful enemies or groups of them kill them before they even make one hit.
I'm at character level 7 now and I chose invisibility for the extra 2nd level spell after all. The duration of invisibility seems to take my character level into account rather than my caster level, which is such a relief. I can take my time when the battles that are too difficult, slowly casting every one of five boars while being invisible. Then, if possible I retreat, rest, rinse, repeat.
I'm a bit worried about facing off with Desther at Helm's Hold. With a +1 celestial longsword my BAB is 8, so I guess I can take out the Ritual Golems protecting him myself while my summon distracts Desther. Plus with luck I might just be able to get my first 3rd level spell. I need a few thousand more experience, but I only have one more Waterdhavian creature to fetch. The one in Blacklake.
I have to say, I'm enjoying this. I usually play on hardcore difficulty but that's still easy. I have to really combine the physical and the arcane if I want to emerge victoriously from battle. Even if I work my way around difficult battles with invisibility munchkins, I can't always summon enough boars. I have to save one Mage Armor for myself and get two or three hits as well.
I wish I had more time to play. I've been at this game for almost a week now. Progress is dead slow.
