KoTOR was one of the most immersible games ever, there was no way, that a sequel could have been better.
Quite frankly, KoTOR 2 was a total letdown - the game just did not seem complete - music, story, characters, even graphics - all was giving me this impression of being unpolished - like someone rushed with the release too much.
The first part will alwas remain as a classic, I think you will all agree with me. But as for the sequel - it is just another failure to live up to the greatness of its predecessor.

Er, no. That's the whole point of this thread. That's why quite a few people feel the second title was better than the first, because they feel the first was low on features, and very dumbed down on gameplay. This doesn't mean anybody in particular is correct, but please don't put assumptions into people's mouths.Kruszakus wrote:The first part will alwas remain as a classic, I think you will all agree with me.
Let's just remember to make this a place where you (meaning anybody) give your opinions about which game *you* think is better and why, rather than stating what everybody else thinks is better and why.

Well, sorry for imposing my views on the others, but I am not the only one, who thinks, that doing the same game again, and throwing in a bunch of garbage should be one square above the original concept.
I know that my words are harsh - but just try to understand me - KoTOR was an incredible experience to me - the atmosphere, the joy of exploring new worlds, characters, music, graphics - everything was just incredible. So I was expecting something much more than that from the second part, but it was all the same, heck - even less! Just like the first and the second part of Fallout - more complex, extended and so on - but it brought nothing new - just few cosmetic changes and that was all... new ideas make the game great, not just cheap repetition!
So sorry - but from this point, the first part should be considered as a classic in its genre.
BTW - Sorry for grammar mistakes, I'm from Europe...

Clearly, you love the game. No one is trying to change your opinion, but just as clearly, others here do not love the game, or even care for it very much, and really liked the second part a lot better. They're entitled to to their opinion, and you are entitled to yours. It's as simple as that.

U guys got it all wrong!!!!!!
bloody hell u guys u were debating whats better k1 or k2...... then u said k1 coz its goit better romance, story and planets.........
1st of all if u played kotor 2 u know theres a definate romance with either handmaiden or or the blind chick in red....... i was evil and before i went tomalachore 5 she told me to stay back..... we got talkin and she said " could i please just once see you threw my eyes"....... by that she ment lets screw..... so we did.... so u can hav 2 romances!
2nd of all u guys say of all the planets..... in korriban on k1 u end up killen the masters.... so in k2 its desserted... THEY WERE GOOD TO DO THAT!.. if u killed the masters of the jedi order oif course the jedi would fail... so the planets rock!
3rd and last is the story line..... the story line is pretty tatty compared to k1 but it still has more intresting npc's....(SPOILER!)
u find out atton is a torture.... and many more.... also the influence and the other bots give reallly good things!!!!!!!!!!!!
KOTOR 1 SUCKS COMPARED TO KOTOR 2!

KOTOR 1 SUCKS COMPARED TO KOTOR 2!
I personally like the first one better, for the obvious reasons of characters, plot, and atmosphere. The first one had great characters, the only one that was weak was Zaalbar. But in the second, many characters, such as Atton, G0-T0, and Bao-Dur, I didn't care for at all, and I never used...I'm pretty sure G0-T0 never even got a kill. I also really hated Kreia, and I really wish that I could have killed her by by the time you get to the first planet. The idea of Revan's story over the Exile's is also a reason the first is superior. I must admit I've beaten the second one only once, so I might have missed some plot points along the way, but it seemed that the whole Malachor V thing has a big build up to it, but it's never really explained in enough detail, and I'm really fuzzy about why the Exile is that way. Other things KOTOR 2 did wrong was a bad influence system, some predictable plot twists, and a VERY slow start. It was still a good game, but not nearly as good as KOTOR 1.

Knights of the Old Republic
This is the game of games. It was the first and best for a reason. You will notice that this game is called Knights of the Old Republic. The second game takes the same name but with its own title addition, i.e 'The Sith Lords'.
The first game is the one and only Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. All others that follow build on it and may be better, but they will never be able to contrast with the effect created by the release of the first game.

Kotor 2 didn't feel like Star Wars, you know? Really!
Kotor 1 was just... right. It had kinda funky clothes... (I'll admit, the robes in the second game were *much* better, instead of the clingy ones in the first)... and was a little dumbed down. But it was the first in the series: it was designed with first-time players in mind. I was glad that me and my own mother could sit down and play the game, without her asking me "Well, what's going on? I'm confused!"
Not to mention the storyline is perfect in the first. With the second, I fought my little brother (yeah, I include the whole family in my gaming escapades... ) to finish the game first. I figured "Well, he'll ruin the big ending for me." Only... there *was* no big ending. Just... "You are you, and that's that. Have fun." The end felt incomplete (which, some or most of you might tell me, was because the game was rushed into completion).
The first... wow. When it got into the cinema of "Oooh, the big secret!" I was like. "Oh. What is it? WHAT IS IT?!?" and only when I saw Master... gah, Master Green-Twilek, saying that "this is a special case" I got it. I felt the blood drain out of my face. Oh my gosh. I'm... I'M???... Revan. *faints* While I'm sure lots of you figured it out before then, I did not. And it was the shock of a lifetime. Something akin to, I'm sure, what many devoted Star Wars fans felt when they heard, "No, Luke, *I* am your father." ect ect ect...
Don't get me into the lack of romance in the second. *UGH* So close with Atton... so close! I thought we'd start getting into flavorful banter... until he said, "I just didn't want you to think I was doing any of this for anything else other then the past." The... the past? You mean... *sniff* You don't like me? What can I say... my mushy gushy female feelings were all hurt. Forget wanting to train him into a Jedi, I wanted to kick his tail off my ship!
But Carth. *Ahhh* He was grand. For a long while after beginning the Carth romance, I accidentally called my boyfriend Carth. Imagine his shock when he learned about my little affair with the hunky, emotional C-man! Honestly, my dude's name is Clark. Clark... Carth.. I got messed up on more then one occasion. Thank goodness he played KOTOR too!
That's my two cents! First preceeds all!

What the female Revan really thinks when Carth says his little catchphrase...

KotOR I was better than KotOR II in my opinion. The thing that I like in all games is the story. To me the story is like two thirds of the game. The rest is the graphics and the character build, and so on. When I completed KotOR II, I was like
".......So that's it? There's nothing else to it?" KotOR II has some inprovements, like almost every equipable item is upgradeable, and the influence thing, which I didn't get at first.

Endings
I also feel that KOTOR is better for the run up to and ending as well. If you think about it in the first game you have to fight lots of Dark Jedi before reaching Malak. And before Malak you have to fight Bastila/3 Dark Master Jedi and also fight the Star Forge Defences. And then when you fight Malak it is the same as fighting him 9 times.
In the second game you enter the Sith Academy on Malachor V and the majority of people that you fight are assassins. Yes there are some Dark Jedi but not enough.
However in its defence i must say that you do have to fight both Sion and Traya multiple times.
KOTOR is still No 1 though.

I found KOTOR II to be vastly superior to the first one, in all areas. Yeah, the second game was incomplete, but hopefully the Restoration Project mod will restore most of the game to how it was originally supposed to be...
I just found that KOTOR II had a much deeper and better plot than the first game. I found the huge twist in the first game about the main character to be rather lame and disappointing, while I found the newer concepts about the Force and the uniqueness of The Exile to be much more entertaining. The second game also took the plot from the first game and twisted it sideways, with Revan going off out of known space.
In KOTOR II, I also found the NPCs were much deeper. The influence system also opened up a whole new avenue for character development. Kreia was an excellently written NPC that I truly hated at by the end of the game (the good kind of hate that you appreciate). I actually cared about most of the NPCs (with the except of a few, like G0-T0, whom I couldn't figure why The Exile didn't just space the bloody droid). By contrast, the first game had few NPCs that weren't annoying or one-trick characters. Carth and Jolee were somewhat interesting, Bastila wasn't all that bad. Both T3 and HK-47 were more interesting in II. II also had the Handmaiden, Mira, Atton, Bao-dur, and Visas which were all very interesting characters.
Both games were exceedingly easy, which I blame on their release first as console games. II did have flaws, notably the starting Peragus level. However, as a whole, even with the incompleteness I still find KOTOR II to be the superior game. I've tried to replay both, and got bored with the first game, while I wanted to play through the second one again after my replay.

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
This is really just a break down of both. sorry this is really long
I have never played the first KOTOR, however i've done a lot of looking into it (a lot!!) *i am trying to convince my friend to let me borrow it*
i'm going to have to say i can't pick which one is better....
KOTOR 1 (obviously) was a much more finished product. the story lines and interactions were very deep and thought out (though i've heard the love things are borderline annoying)
The big twist in KOTOR 1 was more unexpected (i would think) than the one in KOTOR 2.
The characters are much more dynamic as well!
much more than that i can't say
*i played KOTOR 2 on xbox*
*this is without this so called "restoration" mod*
*First of all i just have to say Atton's lines are absolutly hilarious!*
HOWEVER! What i like about KOTOR 2, is the influence! Yes Yes i know, "Yea but in like 5 minutes you can change their alignment" (yea i read almost everyon page of this thread) And yea it was fairly cheasy. some characters (atton and visas i think) follow kinda whatever you do, BUT THEN there are characters (Doa-bur seemed especially annoying) who only will react positivly towards you if you act towards the LS or DS.
Next, KOTOR 2 (OMG) was not completed. The storyline was abrupt towards the end of the game (stupid fans for pushing for it to come out and stupid game developers not taking their time)
anyway, some characters in KOTOR 2 were nearly completely useless.
GOTO? really he was just a nuisance and i never actually used him becuase his abilities were pathetic.
Also, T3 (while was an amusing character for a droid) tended to do poorly in combat
HK... you get him so late in the game its just silly. although he was absolutly hilarious sometimes (unless there is a secret way to get him early.)
one thing. you can see your shipmates interacting with eachother, however it has no affect.
Also, jedi characters were so rediculousy overpowered compared to non-jedi characters. I mean take any of the characters you can turn into jedi... like atton. yea hes pretty decent, but BAM give him a lightsaber and he owns.
Next! quests on each planet (I also here they were recycled planets. LAME!) very predictable, sometimes seemed silly and rather unexciting. I mean take Dantooine "I am looking for a jedi. oh first i have to salvage the enclave, see the jedi in a cave, THEN i must either defend Khoonda from mercinaries to help them assualt it" don't know if it was like that in KOTOR 1 but hey.
back to the storyline. Now obviously they tried to leave it hanging for a KOTOR 3. but first lets look at the storylines from both stacked on top of eachother. read this thread and there are a few examples of inconsistencies.
But there are inconsistencies within KOTOR2 itself! i will use atton as an example
when you are on Taris in the secret academy. Kreia reads his thoughts and knows why he throws up feelings to block his thoughts.
also lets say for your first planet you go to Nar shaddar.
the two twilek's will come up to you and say atton isn't who says he is. Then you can confront him about it. He will explain he used to be a sith and he used to kill jedi. He would throw up feelings and thoughts so the jedi wouldn't go deeper to see that he was going to kill them. He explains that one jedi showed him the force and he ran to nar shaddar. then he met you on peragus. then you can make him become a jedi
Although later, (this is really obvious right here) you can get Kreia to teach you to listen with the force. you can hear atton counting cards, and listing off random things. WHILE YOU AND KREIA KNOW WHY you talk about why he might possibly do it. so you can ask him and WHILE YOU AND HE BOTH KNOW you have a conversation like you don't
second to last thing. Atris, she seemed like she was going to be a humongo part of the story (as well as the other jedi) but she really wasn't. you encounter her in the beginning of the game. she steals your lightsaber whoopdie do. then at the end you fight her and she reveals nothing about your exile and some other useless info. Also Revan and Sion. (plus Revan cannot be understood. and neither can the sith holocrons at the end. thats another story)
Lastly, while the storyline of KOTOR 2 was obviously left over for a sequel, not even your final conversation with kreia reveals much at all. The mystery of your exile is not revealed. all the jedi that knew anything are dead (well unless you didn't kill atris) wasn't that really the whole point of the game was to find that reason?! ugh
well thats my rant. sorry its so long
*even with all those flaws it the influence that i play it for. i have beaten the game around 9 times. 3 dark side 5 light side and 1 down the middle (i don't suggest that) it adds a very interesting part of the game*

um no the romance goes just about that far. the girls trying to hold you back if you are a guy
and if you are a girl, atton hits on you, defends you against what others say, and seems to claim you as "his" to the others.
he yells at the dude you pick up on dantooine (who also makes very vague "love" references to you) it is NO WHERE on the level of KOTOR 1
