If I understand correctly, you try close processes through taskmanager while Fallout 2 is running? If so, basically it doesn't matter if the game closes itself as you should restart the game nevertheless between each task you close.

Tedious work especially if you have several dozens tasks running, I know, but once you find the correct task(s) you don't have to repeat it.

Couple of things to check:
1) Which language version of the game you have?
2) Which language version of Windows are you using? And what language settings you have on at the moment? Don't know if those can cause your problem, but worth of checking.
3) Have you perhaps downloaded mods to Fallout? Some may alter the language, though can't remember if there was Italian one.

I have us version but i also tried uk version. Didnt help. Italian mod came with the game but I deleted it because i dont have use for it. That is why I dont understand how I managed to change the language :speech: It may be possible that my brother messed up with the mod without me knowing about it. Does anyone have any idea how to change the language back to English? I have tried to use different versions of Fallout 2 (no italian mods in those) but the game is still in Italian.

fallout two patch?

Alright i don't think this warrants a new thread, but how do you install the patch? I'm using Windows XP and generally i just use consoles for gaming, the patch i ever downloaded was the ZM patch and steam took care of that :D , also will i lose my saved data when i do install it correctly? i just downloaded it and thought it would work and now i'm a few hours in and i noticed just a little whiles ago.

Hmm... didn't mean to write that much.

Edit: nevermind i downloaded the 1.05 instead and it worked

IIRC, there's also a high-resolution patch for Fallout 2. Maybe that will help? Try playing around with your screen settings might help too.

All the patches, including High Resolution patch version 2.0a can be downloaded here

Also, what OS and DirectX are you using? And have you tried the trick mentioned in the first post? (Updating DirectX and/or video card drivers)

Good to know, I will add the High Res patch as one possible solution to that problem.

After having installed Fallout 2, nothing happens when I run the exe.

I installed the 1.05 patch, and still nothing.

I reinstalled with a smaller install, and still nothing.

I tried running in Windows 95 and 98 compatability mode, and it came up with the 'windows can't run this, do you want to report it to Microsoft' thing.

I reinstalled the patch, tried that in W95/98 compatability mode, and nothing happened (not even the 'do you want to report' thing).

Just about the only thing I've not tried is installing, installing the patch, restarting the computer and trying again, but I'm not optimistic about my chances.

I have a modern computer, directx and drivers all installed, and winxp with loads of service packs.

After you try to run the exe, check task manager if there is process called "fallout2.exe" (or similiar). If there is, try to end it and run the game again. Of course, before rerunning the exe be sure there is no processes with that name running, as I have seen couple of times that for some reason I had two processes with that name running, and the game didn't start anymore.

After that, you could try what you said you haven't, it just might work.

Have you ran your virus scan lately? That problem could be caused my virus. Also, you should check that the game hasn't been blocked by your antivirus and/or firewall software. Happened to me couple of times with Fallout 1, but this depends on fully your antivirus/firewall software.

Lastly, did you try this method? There could be something running which blocks Fallout 2 entirely.

Thanks for the reply Kipi.

I checked task manager. What happened was that the exe popped up briefly on the processes, then disappeared again.

I've installed and started playing BG2 instead. This seems to have solved my problem :)

Besides basic stuff, you can also check if updating videocard drives or DirectX helps.
what do You mean by "basic stuff"? Basically this is the problem I'm having - all I can think of is a corrupted savegame cause older ones are free from this glitch. Kinda funny because none of the NPCs attacks me even when they're supposed to - like ants in Broken Hills underground or Wanamingos in Redding.

The methods which were listed at the very beginning of the thread:
Here are some basic things to do if your Fallout 2 doesn't work:
-Reboot the computer
-Install newest patch
-Reinstall the game
-If running under Win XP:
*Try to change the compatibility mode to something else (Win 95 and 98 should be good)
*If you have SP 2 installed, remove it, cause it may cause some problems.
Though I do not suggest the last one, as it most probably will leave your computer very vulnerable.

I installed the trilogy pack and I can't save in eather fallout 1 or 2. All it says is that I have an error and it cant save. Also in fallout 1 if i try to zone out of the cave the game says it doesnt have enough space to open the map and crashes.
