a couple of questions...

Post by Andurbal »

I've only been playing the game for some hours and I have these questions:

1. Do the shops/caravans replenish their caps so you can sell more items to them and how often?

2. Do they replenish their supplies and how often? When they do, do they have new items or are there always the same?

3. How can someone estimate how many APs are used for a single shot for each gun in VATS? And how many APs are used for reloading?

Yes, every few days.

I'm pretty sure their inventory changes with time, but I'm not 100% sure how often or if it depends on your level.

It varies by weapon. You can check the stats for each weapon in the equipment database here:

Fallout 3 @ GameBanshee

Not sure how many AP it takes to reload, but it's too many. If you go into VATS and see that you need to reload, it's usually better off to exit VATS, reload manually (dodging if necessary) and go back into VATS.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Thanks for yor answers Belthan!

I can't help but wonder why I'm not able to buy back what I just sold to someone...

Well I mostly use moira so I don't know if this applies to all merchants, i have seen items i have sold her in her inventory for days afterwards. They tend to disappear sometimes when she restocks. this actually makes sense though. What else will she trade for to get caps.

non-sense

Well, I did some testing with the shopkeepers in Megaton, and it seems only Moira keeps and sells the items you sell her. But when I sell something to the others (Gob, Doctor, Stahl) it just disappears! This doesn't make any sense now, does it?

Traders and Merchants buy/sell stuff for profit. You sell them stuff and someone else comes along to buy... makes things go along well.

Moira... is a kind hearted little... ditz... I like her, not that I don't, but it may "explain" why she keeps your stuff. Or she's simply keeping them until you die and become famous with the book and all and then sell them. :)

Edit: I think the reload rate is either 1/5th the AP cost for firing or about 5AP. Average, at least I think is about 5AP. This is from what I noticed in using weapons ranging from assault to hunting rifles and energy weapons. It seems to take off about 5 (not more than 10) slivers from the bar. Never did count to see if each sliver is actually one AP (although I believe so).

When I say everthing I sell disappears it just DISAPPEARS THE VERY MOMENT I SELL THEM! No-one comes along to buy... It's a bit unbelieveable, but hasn't anyone else noticed that? :speech:

Lol.. yea. But I seldom, if ever, buy back stuff I sold since it is (usually if not always) economically unsound to do so... barring some accidental sales, but that occurs rarely and none so far for Fo3. :)

So I've never actually noticed for most of the merchants.

I believe, who's that ghoul in the Megaton bar... Bob(?) at least seems to retain the inventory even when reentering the sell screen, since he has a small inventory and I sometimes sell to him in the earlier stages as he pays a little more. Can't be sure if it mandates that I do not exit the "dialog session" or not tho.... will need to load the game to check out. :D
