Ironman tips
Ironman tips
So I've started an ironman game, going through with a elven mage/thief multi. I have a couple of problems I'd like help with, and also welcome any other advice that I might find useful but haven't thought to ask about.
Problem one is incapacitating spells. I don't bother to memorize dispel magic because by the time I need it I am already confused/feared/held/stunned/webbed/charmed/mazed/imprisoned and watching myself get taken to zero hit points totally unable to do anything. Now, when I get the contingency spell I plan on setting up a dispel magic upon "helpless," but until then, are there any tips for avoiding becoming incapacitated?
Secondly, in this game I've unsuccessfully attempted a pickpocket from a merchant, and I'd really like him to not hate me forever. Is there a way to calm aggravated NPCs? Before, it was just a matter of reloading. Now I'm wondering if I'll not only have to be cautious about dying, but also cautious about upsetting plot-critical people.
Any other wisdom gained from personal ironman games is much appreciated.

Hey there-
1. Dispel/Remove Magic can get rid of huge nuisances like Stoneskin, Haste, and Protection from (*insert whatever here*) provided that your level is adequately higher than your enemy's level. Breach can dispel a lot of these things automatically, of course, but Remove Magic has an important advantage over Breach: it is an area effect as opposed to a targeted one. In other words, you can dispel effects on multiple enemies, not just one. Also, because it's an area effect, Remove Magic can dispel stuff on invisible enemies while Breach can't.
2.There are tons of items that protect you against confusion, etc., etc. Dragonslayer +3 protects you from fear. Arbane's Sword protects you from stun. The Greenstone Amulet protects you from a whole slew of things, even psionics. Lilarcor +3 protects you from confusion, domination, and more. Check out the excellent items listing on the Gamebanshee BG2 guide page to see for yourself.
3. To avoid PO'ing merchants, just get your pickpocketing skill as high as possible and use things like Potions of Mastery Thievery, Potions of Perception, and the Gloves of Pickpocketing. You can combine multiple potions and the Gloves to get your skill sky-high. Now, I'm not sure about this, but I believe that some items just can't be stolen, and you can't steal anything at all from certain merchants. As far as I can tell, the more expensive an item is, the harder it is to filch, and the more things you try to take, the higher your chance of getting caught becomes. If all else fails: reload!

Sorry, thought "ironman" was the same thing as "solo".
99% of what I wrote still applies though. You just have to be willing to gamble that you won't get caught. But I don't think this is a smart gamble at all. You could potentially miss out on a TON of necessary items. I would just buy stuff. Gold flows like water in this game!

So I guess there is no way to quell the angry NPCs. Oh well, Bernard. It was fun while it lasted.
I guess another good question would be: are there any disproportionately large reward:effort ratio things that I should try tackling? I'm trying to do the easiest stuff first to build up my character and his saves/spells/thac0/etc.

I've always considered the Mae'Var thief guild quest and the Trademeet quests to be the easiest of the "high-exp-pt-reward" quests (they do have rough patches though). The de'Arnise Keep quest is also not so hard if you know how to abuse the game engine, but I find it quite challenging for low-level characters when played straight.
When it's early in the game I always complete all the various little (non-stronghold) quests in Athkatla like the circus tent, the various goings-on in the Graveyard District, freeing Hendak, the Bridge District murders, the Help-the-Temple missions, etc. Some of these are challenging for low-level characters, but most are not. The exp. pts. they reward add up nicely, and the gold really adds up too.

All good suggestions. Mine as a dedicated mage player in BG2 - and if you don't mind using over powered weapons - get the staff of the magi - as quick as possible - it will solve a lot of the problems in battle that you have. Also your second best friend in battle is the wand of monster summoning (doing ironman still allows summons right? dont forget to sell it to recharge - if not get the trusty and almost never fails wand of cloud kill). But before you get anyone of those - as the staff of Magi and wand of cloudkill are a bit later or maybe just TOO much cheese - you should try to get a ring of invisibility (my favorite item that no one can say is really overpowered but oh so useful) - it solves so much problems when you are over run with monsters - and its great for a hit/cast a fireball and run really fast (ie disappear from monsters) and for scouting when your stealth has not reached 100+%.

Aye, the staff is a very useful item indeed. You'll find that charged items help a lot, such as the wands and certain staffs, such as the Staff of Power. Also, try to get the Golem Manual. In my opinion, the best form is the first upgrade, being the clay golem, as it's resistant to all types of weapons except for those that deal bludgeoning damage.
Keep in mind that some enemies that aren't immune to backstab can see invisibility, so you might need distractions. Early on, I think that Spider Spawn is a great spell to use. As a mage/thief, you'll have a poor THAC0, so avoid dual wielding and try using a weapon with a good bonus (to THAC0), if early on, Enchanted Weapon is a nice spell to use as well. You can really buff yourself up with spells and a lot of abilities can be gained through items, as mentioned before.
The way I'd play the character, knowing both classes separately, is something of a summoner, hit and runner and maybe even self buffer (or a debuffer).
As for your troubles, there are several items that grant you free action (immunity to slow, haste and paralysis type spells) as well as items that give you immunity to attacks on your mind.

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
OK, so I keep dying to "save or else" spells, so it has made my beginning run through of the game pretty standardized. You can skip down to tl;dr if you don't care how I'm going about it. Maybe spoilers if you've never played baldurs gate before.
After waking up, I kick Imoen out of my party, memorize find familiar, 3x magic missile, 2x mirror image, and 2x fireball. I promptly go back to sleep. I then wander over to grab 3 potions of healing, a long sword, and arrows. I wander through the first room, turn off the machine, and ignore the mephit whose back is to the wall. Walking past the genie I tell him, "I have no time for you." Then I launch a fireball into the hallway killing all 6 goblins. I walk up to where the sewage golem is, stab the mephit, finish him off with a magic missile, and loot up grabbing the +1 longsword. In the room opposite, I walk in, stab/magic missile the mephit, and grab the short bow. Then I cast reflected image, use the bhaalspawn power draw upon holy might, and kill the two lesser clay golems who want to wreck my day later on and see through invisibility. I talk to rielev, take his cells, throw his cells away, grab healing potions and the activation stone. Activating the sewage golem, I stealth into the lair with the Otyugh, backstab/flee/backstab until he is dead (as he is quite slow) and then loot more healing potions and an oil of speed. Stealthing past the goblins I enter the "masters bedroom," fireball the dryads without even talking to them, disarm the traps and grab the helm of balduraan and wand of lightning key. Then I head down to Elliseme's room, disarm the traps, grab the potion of master thievery and other goodies, quaff the oil of speed, then beeline for the portal. Tell Yoshimo he's a jerk, run into the portal room and backstab a far portal, run back into the adjacent hallway, stealth, walk past the mephits, and close the door leaving me alone with their portals. After dispatching the portals, I grab the wand of fire key, backstab the clone, stealth past the baddies, disarm the trap before the big hallway, stealth up and run inside. The haste has usually worn off by now, but it's no big deal. I hug the wall, stopping by the fire and lightning pedestals to grab the wands, grab the ring +1 from the far side, and stealth right back out into the daylight.
After egressing I run over to Gaelen's and go upstairs, sell the helm of balduraan and the two wands, buy two potions of master thievery, quaff the three ive accumulated, steal the fourth, quaff it, then proceed to rob him of any necessities (ID glasses, my wands and helm, maybe some other misc items). I then head to the sewers, sell the help to roger the fence, buy up his potions of thievery, invis, speed, mind focusing, and genius. Quaff the potions of mind focusing, go to mekraths lair, take his mirror quest, return to the sewers, pickpocket the imp, go back to mekrath, say something nasty to him, then unload the wand of lightning at him. loot up his tower after taking down the mephits, quaff the extra mind focusing that i find there and scribe any scrolls (contingency being the most important one, failed that once, ouch), and sell whatever is left over to roger and hang on to the portal gem. Then I go to the promenade and rob the scroll merchant, ribald for his ring, and the scroll lady in the adventurers mart. Then off to the copper coronet to quickly free hendak and take the nice tuigan bow, and help myself to bernads goodies. Heres a problem, though: I usually fail pickpocketing bernard. I'll even quaff an extra potion of master thievery or two before hand, but he catches me quite often. Luckily he is the only one mad at me, and I can just ignore him for the rest of the game after I get what I'm able. The next merchants on my list are in the bridge district, steal what potions I need from Miss Cragmoon, take a nap, then steal and scribe what I need from the little rogue scroll merchant who operates when Cragmoon isn't there. And I still have a couple of hours left on my potions of mind focusing.
So this is pretty straightforward. My last game I died after going to the planar prison and failing a save or else to the warden who sees invisible. I think I've also died by accidentally clicking a door with a petrification trap in the bridge district. The game before that I think I tried to kill Renal for the boots of speed after finishing all the thief side quests but before aligning with Gaelen or Bodhi (I remember having killed him once without repercussion, but I don't remember the circumstances). I let of several fireballs from my wand, but as soon as a shadow thief wandered into my range of view Arkanis showed up and gave me the what-for. I think two enjoyed so much success with his run because he was a single class, and as such got better saves much earlier on because he wasn't splitting experience between two classes.
Anyway, now for the questions. Right now the most important thing seems to be filling my spellbook as it gives me tools as well as experience, and has almost 100% success rate if I scribe while my intelligence is bolstered by these potions (hooray for mind focusing lasting 12 hours). Did I miss any obvious scroll merchants I can rip off? I think in my next run I'll head over to trademeet to rip off some of their spells, but the last time I was there I didn't find too many scrolls (despite lots of them being listed as being there from other resources). Is it worth it to try to pickpocket the cowled wizards in the government district?
Thanks for the replies so far, but for the most part it has been things I am aware of. I can't wear every item that protects against stun/charm/sleep/hold person/confusion/fear, but the Shield of Harmony in trademeet is pretty comprehensive (but I can't use it without UAI). I think I just need to play it super-safe until my level gets high enough to get those tasty saves. Also, for those of you who haven't tried it, this is pretty fun. Your actions truly carry weight...rather than just being something to "try" before reloading. You can bork quests up by doing/saying the wrong thing, make merchants unusable due to thieving, fail scribing important and rare spells, all to craft a unique experience for each game.
tl;dr - Are there any places to get high level scrolls in Athkatla besides the merchant in Waukeens Promenade, the merchant in the adventurer mart, Bernard in the Copper Coronet after you free Hendak, Mekrath in the temple sewers, and the thief in the bridge district next to Nebs house?

Aren't those merchants enough - between them you have all the spell scrolls you could possibly want.
Its very hard to steal from Bernard - don't do it is the best advice even with potions of master thievery.
What is your character alignment - chaotic evil? That's a lot of thieving.:speech:
To get protection from confusion/stun/mind magic etc - you need the hardly ever seen green jemstone ring (one of a kind and you can't make it yourself either or at least i don't think so if you want the one that actually works and protects continuously) - very hard to get and/find since there is only one villain that uses the power that creates it and you have to time it such that he casts the M-sword spell - so don't kill him too fast (and sometime he doesn't even cast it so it can be pretty hard to get.) And it actually looks like a regular greenjemstone ring (which there is lots of in the game) so be careful and look carefully when you find it before deciding to sell it as another ring.
In BG2 there is only 2 rings you actually want to really have - one is the ring from the lich and the other is the greenjemstone ring - try to actually beat the lich before taking his ring (yes i know you can pickpocket it from him if you dont feel like battling him but that is a bug and you shouldn't take advantage of it. Nothing like fighting Kangaxx to show you that you are not all powerful at the moment.

I'd recommend picking up the cloak of non-detection from the party above one of the hotels in the promenade.
Extremely useful for soloing.
Also pick up the Tuigan bow from the beastmaster who has the key to Hendak's cage in the copper coronet.
Returning the acorns to the dryads in the windspear hills is an easy 10k exp.
Trademeet is a fairly simple quest if you have access to summons that delay the trolls for you. Pick up cernd near the end to gain exp for beating Fandhorn.
Bracers of archery from the quest are great as are many of the items in trademeet itself, particularly the belt of inertial barrier and cloak of displacement.
Get the robe of vecna and helm of vhalior as soon as you can. If you have the bonus merchants, if you don't you can download them from a variety of modding sites.
If you are ok with modding it get the improved anvil mod. Very handy for a solo character if a tad overpowerd in many ways.
What are your weapon specializations? Sword and shield would work well with shield of harmony and dragonslayer which would protect you from most things. As a thief I think you can use small shields but it's been a while.
All this being said, I don't think soloing with no reloads is possible, particularly if you go through ToB, all it takes is one vorpal hit and poof, gg.
Best of luck though.

The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.

Not planning on doing ToB ironman. I'm not very familiar with it, anyway, beating it only a fraction of the times I have beaten bg2.
I had to wipe my HD so I lost the registry entries that tells the game that it is installed, and now I forget what tweaks and fixes I had installed (no large mods like tactics or anything, though). Guess I can just restart, though it is obnoxious to have to do so without having died.

Right you are, Ken.
When you say that you're doing an "Ironman" run, dos that mean that you're doing a solo run without dying, or can you have party members?
I mean, solo is hard enough as it is at times. One missed trap or one failed save and it could easily be game-over with nobody to help you out.
I salute you if it is a solo run.

Are you allowed to pick up NPCs to initiate their quests? Maybe a bit cheesy, but the ring of wizardry from Jaheiras quest could be quite useful? Of course you get one from the planar sphere later on, but you could always use both unless you want ring of Gaxx + something else.

Reading this text constitutes a copyright infringement. You are under arrest.
Yes, you can rotate NPCs in and out for their questlines.
While this is a way to maximize experience gains by your party, I'm not a fan of it. You have to wait some time before a lot of quests even become available, and the experience granted to each party member usually isn't substantial enough to make me waste an hour or more with Jan or Mazzy just to get their quests.
In the case of Jaheira, her quest line is super long. To start, you have to wait a long time AND complete a series of necessary side-quests(locket [if able], curse, harper hold) before her main quest really starts. Then it's an almost never-ending cycle of waiting for hours between her quest interactions. To top it all off, the quest is often buggy, and if you're romancing her, it may bug the romance. To fix this, you need to either access the CLUAConsole or Shadowkeeper.
The only NPC I take with me for completing quests is Valygar, because he makes the Planar Sphere quest much more interesting. I can't bring myself to kill him either. Once again, my RP sense gets the better of me.
EDIT: You may have been asking him if HIS rules allow him to take other NPCs. In that case, I have no idea. But the other stuff I said still applies, and I don't think his game would count as solo if he rotated NPCs for their quest lines since you have to wait so long.
I have never heard about this.Sensei wrote:To get protection from confusion/stun/mind magic etc - you need the hardly ever seen green jemstone ring (one of a kind and you can't make it yourself either or at least i don't think so if you want the one that actually works and protects continuously) - very hard to get and/find since there is only one villain that uses the power that creates it and you have to time it such that he casts the M-sword spell - so don't kill him too fast (and sometime he doesn't even cast it so it can be pretty hard to get.) And it actually looks like a regular greenjemstone ring (which there is lots of in the game) so be careful and look carefully when you find it before deciding to sell it as another ring.
Could you give more info about it?
