Trying to run icewind dale, again in XP.

Post by wise grimwald »

I have played the game fine using Millenium, but have now tried to play the game + heart of winter + luremaster. It has been working Ok but a bit slow loading new areas. That is until I try to go to the area with the monks. The game then crashes. Every time.
1st question
Could this be a dodgy disc or is it a problem that others have had?

In addition, I wondered if I needed a patch, but all the patches are dead links.
One of the forums said that there was a problem with some UK games and that a patch was needed but again, dead link.

2nd question
Anyone know where I can get the patches?

I thought that I might get to the inaccessible area using cheats.
I know that you can do this in BG. Is the same possible in IWD?

Yes, that's possible.
Sorcerers.net might have a patch. I still have it. If you PM me you e-mail, I'll send it to you.

I have discovered that if you install "trials of the luremaster", it should already be patched.
Thanks for info that I should be able to teleport to the monk's area.
I have enabled cheats.
Do you, or does anyone else know the command to go to that area. Because I can't get there, I can't use x to find the area's name, and it isn;t in Dan Simpson's Walkthrough.

Just a long shot, but doesn't the area appear when you press "X" or "L" to get the coordinates? I don't have IWD installed, so I can't check it, but someone else might?

It does, but the game crashes when going from one area to the next. I can't get to that area to find out what it is.

I have now re-installed without HoW and am hoping that I can now complete the first part of the game(Taking note of areas). I will then re-install HoW and Luremaster to complete the game. I am hoping that will work.

Time will tell.

Whilst I am not intending to use the code to change areas now. I haven't found that in the lists of cheat codes. Yes there is teleportation, but that appears to be within the area where you are already located. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Have you installed the game in the same directory? It might pay off to delete the entire directory so you can make a fresh install.

I did indeed do a fresh install, but without HoW.
I am now with the Yetis. In my previous game I found an item with no description. This time it has one which is encouraging. it is Gnomish tools.
I don't know what they are for, as I have not picked them up in previous games. (a LONG time ago)
If someone could tell me if they are a quest item, I would be grateful.
Perhaps I should take them to Fiddlebender since he's the only character that I know is gnomish.

I guessed right about Fiddlebender. I've obviously been playing too many RPGs.

Wow, I don't even remember that quest. Never found any repairing tools for Fidlebender.

Could be a random drop. No major quest. You take them to Fiddlebender, he buys them. End of story.
It's possible that it comes from tweaks but I don't think so, looking at the log

I'm sure it comes from the tweaks. There's no such item in the pure game.

Thanks for the info. It's a nice little addition but doesn't change much.
