Help needed.

To be more specific, I need a good old fashioned kick in the pants.

Let me preface this by saying outright I'm too damn old to be in college in the first place. But I am, and I am a couple weeks away from actually graduating. Maybe. At the rate I'm going, I may just tank it in the next couple weeks.

I can't make myself care about this. So, I need some help. Someone motivate me, hell, kick my ass even.

Or, wave a magic wand and make it all go away. Either way works for me.

Hm. Well, if you graduate from college, you just might be a.... Oops! Wrong comic! Oh, here it is. If you graduate from college, in theory if not practice, you just might get a worthwhile professional career, as opposed to a go nowhere job or no employment.

For example, sure my younger brother by two years, endured enough stress to make him become prematurely bald, but now he earns somewhere in between $50,000.00 to $100,000.00 a year, just because he has a bachelor's degree in business systems, or something like that. (Albeit he still owes for his college loans.) He has a nice enough house and sports car.

So if you stick to it, you too could be a professional with a career!

I don't get it. You've gone this far, why throw it all overboard with a couple of weeks to go? Now, if you were at the start, with all that work still to come, I could understand you're getting that sex change operation you always wanted in order to become the bearded lady in a traveling circus. But you're so close...!

LSD- Thanks, but I'm immune to logic. I am also not overly goal oriented. Hence my problem.

AC- You really take this "tough love" thing to extremes, don't you?:speech:

fable- the actual problem is, as soon as I registered for my last classes, my mind seemed to click over to "I've graduated", hence, I view this semseter as pointless.

I have to agree with Fable here... You are *so* close.. and if you throw in the towel now the hard work you've put in over the last few years and the money you have spent on it will be all for naught..

Don't blow this... I speak from personal experience here.
If you do, once you realise what you've thrown away, you'll be kicking your own ass for a long time to come... And unless you plan on enrolling in extreme yoga, that will be very difficult.

Of course... I suppose I could imagine you attired in a loincloth while chanting on a mat somewhere...

But I digress....

Why bother, you're all doomed anyway. No matter how you look at it, life is so hollow. And I guess it was about the time you realised your quest was in vain. Why don't you save us some effort and just lie down and die.

An attempt at dark humor coupled with sarcasm perhaps? Probably.

But my take on this is that I find it offensive especially since you don't yet have the emotional investment with Bloodstalker to make such comments, The context would have been different had it been from someone Bloodstalker considers a close friend.

The absence of smilies take a whole different meaning to your post and leaves a lot of perceptions including the offensive kind.

Please be guided accordingly.

Mah, I was drinking water when I read this. You owe me a new keyboard. Also, under that logic, I've been intimate with The Evil for years now, and it hasn't even been in the form of Weasel.

...On a totally unrelated note, last night I had a nightmare in which you posted without using either teal or smileys. It was truly disturbing.

Hey, be carefull while doing that task! The early 1970's model we had, took 8 D-cell batteries to function. So I imagine applying one with batteries in it to heat, would cause an explosion! So prepare to duck!

Cattle prods predated Tasers. They function by applying an electric shock to the target, a bovine, to get it to move along.

With a cattle prod, no space was required as is needed with bullwhip-flicking.
So less chance of taking out a fellow wrangler's eye or something.

You're welcome! But, well, I didn't want to use my own example as a contrast, even though I thought of it.

My last semester was the Summer of 1985.

Prior to that, my fiancee, Dallas Ann Gibbs, whose father had a fixation for naming his children after Texas cities, so she had a brother "Austin" and a sister "Abilene", et cetera, had allowed a hypothetical talk with her father, to make her break it off with me!

So instead of taking my tests and going to classes in the last week of that semester, all I could think about was trying to win her back somehow.

I ended up failing the Spring Semester of 1985 and loosing my financial aid. I enrolled for the Summer anyway, but barely managed it. So now I'm a drop-out. (I was an art major.)

Sure I'd graduated from a vo-tech with a certificate in Graphic Arts, but I've never had a job or career in it.

I did senior high school, vo-tech, and college, almost at the same time, so some say no wonder I burned out early at the college sophomore level. But it was fun seeking and love seeking, that did me in I say.

So now here I sit, socializing in forums like this, when the doctors say I should be exercising more if I want to loose by diabetes and other medical problems.

So now here I sit, writing lines like this, when I should be out seeking gainfull employment, to earn the money to take care of some of my source stresses.

Like not having a girlfriend since 1995 or so. Well, I could go on, but hopefuly I've mae my point by now!

EDIT: Argh! I came back, because I realised that back then, I was so distraught, that I don't recall the exact timeline's sequence of events, as to what lead to what. But Summer 1985 is correct I think, as far as being my last college semester.

It took me 18 years to finish a degree...started, got a year in dropped out,
worked for a few years, started back taking part time classes, had to drop again, more work then more part time classes...and finally

got it.

Can say from experience...its worth it....
although I did had the same feelings you describe for the last semester...

It's a matter of motivation and desire.

Fable and DW are, as is often the case, quite correct in saying hang in there.

That said I feel rather hypocritical right now as I avoid working on my thesis

I found my undergraduate degree tedious at times. Some classes you take because you MUST take them.

But I'll tell you, with a BSc in physiology and a nearly complete Masters in Public Policy, the most useful class I've ever taken in university is...

Classical Mythology.

Yup. What does that say? To me it means that being university educated is about being well read and capable of thinking creatively. BS, you think more laterally than most. Like a bar patron sitting at the counter which has many different shots upon it you just keep slinking along crab like, moving form point to point.

My only advice in the final days of your degree is to amuse yourself. Write on what interests you, read what excites you and talk about what inspires you. Whatever subject you are studying is bound to have amazing new discoveries and incredible authors.

Unless you are taking biochemistry in which case God Help you.

Now back to saving Canada's health care system.

I've never been called a crab before.

The main issue is, I got all boring classes this semester that I have absolutely no interest in. Couple that with the fact that I'm set to start on my masters in a few months, and I already have the books for those classes, and it's hard for me to concentrate on these classes. I'm a history major BTW, and I'd much rather be reading those grad books on the Roman military at this point.

@Mah...it's cool, let her have her fun with the cattle prod. We all know AC loves me, but if she feels like she has to take baby steps towards me, well, its a sacrifice I must make.

Although you could have saved me a helluva lot of grief if you'd told me earlier she had a thing for educated people.

I refuse to direct a comment at BlueSky until I can find a shorthand way to type his name that doesn;t make it sound like I'm talking to myself.

As someone who just finished the last exam for my degree a few days ago, I understand the feeling of not caring since its so close to the end. I ended up handing in all my last assignments a few days late because I simply couldn't start them on time because I just didn't really care anymore. It was a recurring theme with most of the people I know that are graduating, too.

The way I went about convincing myself to study and work was the fear that, if I didn't, I might not graduate, which would be about seventeen kinds of bad. In the end, its just got to get done, and when it is, you get a nice shiny piece of paper that hopefully gets you a higher salary or something. At least, that's what they tell us youngins.
