The Longest Journey! (Spoilers)

Post by FrozenWasteland »

Hey there!

Well i have been reading through theese forums for the last couple of years, once upon a time i was a member here aswell. But i forgot that account, and though i could make a new one instead!

I actually sat and read through all pages scanning for interesting topics on Baldur's gate forums, and had a couple of laughs. I installed Baldur's gate again (After playing Torment) and wanted to get into the spirit!

I have read many threads about "Make your character like this, he will be the uuubeeer l33t and have 100 magic resistance etc etc..."

Now this isn't really my style, As i find no fun in being THAT powerful. As a caster (Mage,Druid,Cleric) Player, I have played through the games countless times, with every possible combination and enjoyed myself. But now i wanted to try something new, something rather amusing. And something that perhaps few have done before, but we will have to see.

I'm going to try a challenge. I'm going to laugh, cry and cheer in joy. Now to put up some pointers, what i can and cannot do.

I'm going to play a mage (Diviner). This is a BGTUTU game.

- I will play this game solo, I will not accept any npc, that includes imoen in the start. If i want her potions, i'll have to kill her.

- I will not use Algernon's Cloak. (Meaning i will not kill him)

- I will not recharge any wands/amulets/rings etc, Meaning i can buy them. But i won't sell them for charges. There are only two wands of monster summoning, which in return means i will have to make sure i use every single charge at the right moment.

I'm going to end up adding some more restrictions later on the run. When i can think up some.

Now for what i WILL do

- I will add a bag of holding, I can run back and forward and use strenght spells to carry bodies. It is possible, but it's time consuming and i ain't after that. So i'm going to add a bag of holding to him.

- I will complete every single quest in the game (That requires no NPC's), clear and explore all areas. And killing all the stationary monsters / Enemies / Bosses (Will be some random spawns in tutu, I won't bother with those) Example -> There are 13-17 ankhegs i need to clear (AR1400).

- I will use XP cap remover. As i will probably end up with over 600 000 (Might reach 1 000 000, depending on what tutu adds) experience.

- I will save. Many, Many times. I'm going to end up dying incredible many times, Anything from bandits to bosses.

Now for my Character!

Name - Sion.
Race - Human
Class - Mage (Diviner)
Aligment - Chaotic Neutral.
Gender - Male.

Stats

Strenght - 9
Dexterity -18
Constitution -11
Intelligence - 17
Wisdom - 16
Charisma -18

Points - 89

Proficiency

* Sling.

AC - 6

Health 4/4.

Spells

-Blindness
-Chromatic Orb
-Friends
-Identify
-Protection From Evil
-Protection From Petrification
-Magic Missile
-Sleep

I will not use a familiar, to boost my health.

As you see, My mage Sion. Is focused on spell casting, And to make it even more of a challenge i put his strenght low. It's too easy with sleep + quarter staff with 18 strenght to whack them, So we don't want that. I'm going to use sling, And later on dagger of venom.

The low health is to make it even MORE of a challenge, One hit from most mobs when i'm level 1 means instant death. And if i get critically hit a bandit will be able to kill me with his bow when i'm level 3 in one shot. Depending on my level, some early bosses will be able to one shot me aswell.

If i can clear all of BGTUTU, I'll import him to BG2 + ToB and solo with him there aswell. This will take time, But can't say no to a challenge.

And well, That's it for now! I'm going to start in candlekeep, see how it goes. I'll try to keep you posted on the progress!

Phew! That went quick! Candlekeep is now, Finished. I did the starter quests. I begun with memorizing a Magic missile and sleep spell, then went to sleep. And did the following.

-Ran scroll to Firebead.

-Ran book to phlydia, got gem.

-Fought shank, one magic missile (5 damage) and he was down!

-Got the antidote for dreppins cow, Was wondering if i should have ran of with it or not. But i'll get 6 for free in Friendly Arms Inn, so i completed the quest.

-I did not talk to jondalar and his mate, as from previous game i know it's buggy in easy tutu so that sometimes he actually hits you for damage, instead of the 0 he normally should. Didn't want to reload THAT quickly, so chose not to talk with him.

-I killed the rats for Reevor, Got sling ready and 7 shots later all 5 were dead.

-Gave sword to hull, Got some nice money (Thanks to 18 charisma).

-Ran to the priest in the sickbay house and picked up a potion.

-Killed carbos in the bunkhouse. Sleep and then hit him on first shot with sling for 4 damage, Which was enough to kill him.

-Gave the 20 bolts to the guy in barracks and got myself a +1 dagger. (You get it from 18 charisma).

I finnished with :

Dagger +1
Sling (200 bullets)
2 healing potions.
93 gold.

I'm standing infront of imoen now, And suprisingly she joined no matter what i told her ( I remember that she should not have joined if you insulted her. Perhaps this is a tutu thing?) But i'll remedy it by letting her keep the potions, and just remove her from party. Now i'm going to get to Friendly Arms Inn and after that go to bed. I'll continue tomorrow, Good night *Smiles*

When i said i was going off to bed? I lied. I cleared Friendly Arms Inn and i'm going to update that progress now before i'll finnaly get to bed. This is incredible much fun, Even more so than sleeping!

I left Imoen alone, and let her have all the items (I did neither take wand, nor potions) . I ran to gorians corpse, picked up all the items and avoided all monsters. I had to dodge a wolf to the east of the body when i ran to pick up the diamond in the tree. Lucky me the wolf never got close enough to attack, And i entered the next Zone . Elminster spoke to me, And then left. I ran up to pick up the Ring of protection from the stone, running away from some gibberlings and one wolf.

I Reached the ogre without anyone after me, Did a quick save and then tried my luck.

Can a level 1 wizard, with 2 spells and 4 health along with a sling beat the ogre? Yes, Very easy aswell. Had to memorize two sleep spells, rested and then got ready. I begun the fight with throwing a sling shot at him, Which missed. After that i threw a sleep. And here is the fight. ->

Ogre - 1/5 Difficulty

Sion - Atacks ogre. (Misses first shot) .
Sion - casts sleep
Ogre - Unconcious
Ogre - sleep
Sion did 4 damage to ogre.
Sion did 4 damage to ogre.
Sion did 5 damage to ogre.
Sion did 4 damage to ogre.
Sion - casts sleep
Sion - Attacks ogre
Ogre - Unconcious
Ogre - Sleep-
Sion did 3 damage to ogre
Sion did 4 damage to ogre
Sion did 2 damage to ogre
Sion did 2 damage to ogre
Sion did 4 damage to ogre.
Ogre - Death

As you see, I got lucky on the sleeps that he didn't resist neither of them. And i got him down on first try. From this ogre i got ->

Girdle of Piercing
Girdle of Masculinity / Femininity

Morning star

And... Monster summoning II scroll. I'm not sure if i should cry that i'm diviner, and can't learn it. Or if i should cheer that i got it and can use it for later boss fights.

I also got 270 experience.

After this i ran to Friendly Arms Inn. Avoided all the monsters, And finnaly Entered the Zone. First thing i did was run to the east, pick up the ring of Wizadry. Memorized two sleep spells, two magic missiles and rested. After this i followed the road to the West, To kill the 5 hobgoblins and pick up the Wedding ring for the lady at the Friendly Arms (First house to the left when you enter). They are in two groups, 2 in first 3 in second. The first group i used a sleep spell, and killed them both with sling shots. For the second group i used a sleep, But one resisted it. So had to run around and shoot down the 2 sleeping hobgoblins while dodging the one that was following me. I ended up using both magic missiles on him after the two others were dead. Looted them, picked up the ring and ran back. I returned the ring to her (+1 reputation, 400 experience), And prepared myself for Tarnesh. Memorized 4 magic missiles (Only ended up using two) and got ready.

Tarnesh - 2/5 Difficulty

Now to kill Tarnesh with a level 1 mage, Without using any potions. And 4 magic missiles as he is immune to sleep. You can do this two ways.

1.) Use cheese, atack him while he is blue, keep running back and pummeling him. He will never be able to talk to you nor turn red.

2.) Let him turn red, outsmart him , use magic missiles at correct moment, know how to run. And last but not least, have a **** load of luck.

Option 1 is ofcourse, no fun. So i did option two. And it took me 4 tries to bring him down. I'll share.

When he walks down, hit him once with your sling and stand still. So he can talk to you, I got a sling shot on 4 damage. When he is done talking, Pause the game. Do it IMMEDIATLY. Alright, throw a magic missile. this will interrupt his mirror image. My magic missile did 5 damage. Now run to the left from the stairs, see the corners at the wall of this very same building, left from the stairs? There are three of them, run and hide behind the first one. You will be out of line so he will run to you, The time he requires to run to you, Will let the round finnish so you're ready for magic missile #2. Also a luck factor here are the guards, When you mess up his mirror image the guards will be able to hit him.
I had one guard following him when he ran around the little corner to me. When he reaches you around the corner, pause and cast another magic missile. This will be timed so that you interrupt his horror spell. This magic missile did 4 damage for me, And he died. The guard behind him did swing his sword, I don't think he hit Tarnesh at all, And if he did, he did it 0.5 seconds before my missile, as i got the killing blow and experience. I don't know exactly the health on Tarnesh, So can someone clear that for me? I did 13 damage all in all, And i don't think the guard hit any. So might have been 110% my kill! Whee!

Anyway, If you're having bad luck with Tarnesh on any run. Just make sure to interrupt his mirror image quickly, and then run away. The guards will chase him and when you ran far enough, he will start attacking them instead. He is very easy if you use the guards, but he can be done without them aswell. Even with a 4 health mage on level 1 with 4 spells. Now to enter the house (Which i damn well deserve after that fight!) Give in the girdle, sell some and such.

Got 95 gold and a book from giving in the girdle, along with 800 experience which puts me on 2333/2500. I went one floor up and spoke to Landrin (Guy with spider problem in beregost) Thanks to having 18 charisma, he was nice enough to give me 6 (SIX!) Whole antidote bottles. Which is.. Half of the bottles i'll need for this run. Their great to have when i will fight sirenes and hobgoblin elites later on! Oh while here, bought the history of fatefull coin, for Firebeard in beregost (Yes, you can buy it at the Inn across the road there aswell, but i bought it here to have it). Alright i'm done with Friendly Arms Inn for now. There are 7 hobgoblings around the area, You get 35 experience each and i killed 5 of them to pick up the ring. After selling i went to kill the last two (Follow the road behind The castle, next to the road you will find the last two), for some money, items and 70 Experience. They CAN drop some rarer items, like wands (This being VERY rare). I need all the easy Experience i can get, so i ended up killing them. I got a grease scroll, 28 gold and some armor to sell.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I picked up a ring of Wizardry, And right now i got.

6 Antidotes
996 gold.
2 Healing potions

Scrolls

Friends
Monster Summoning II
Magic Missile
Armor
Grease

Experience - 2422/2500

And i'm off to sleep, and Beregost tomorrow! And this time i'll really go to sleep!

I'll try to clear as much as i can tomorrow.

The plan for this morning was to get to Beregost, But i figured out that i could try a sidetrip that i do on my thieves. See if it's possible, And it was.

I went from Friendly Arms Inn to the north, to AR1400 (Ankhegs) . I went north-west a little to speak to Sonner, Telmen and Jebadoh. They wanted me to kill Tenya so i started the quest (The Fisherman and the priestess.)

Many people leave this quest to later on, because you have to run through an ankheg infested area, I did it on my rogue at night with stealth. It's a very easy quest in itself, it's watching out for the ankhegs that is the problem. This can be solved by following the beach behind their house, And move up the beach to the next zone. You will 80% Be ankheg free, and if one is there then reload and try again.

So i ran up the beach, holding my thumbs and finnaly got to the end with no ankheg attacks. I entered the Bridge zone, And ran up north to the house to talk with Tenya. There are only one monster in this zone, and that monster is BEHIND her house (It's an ankheg for a baldur's gate quest) So we can avoid that one.

I spoke to Tenya, told her that i came to kill her. She attacked me.

Tenya 1/5 Difficulty, Even easier than the ogre.

This fight is very easy, all you have to do is use magic missile when she does her first spell. Interrupt the spell and she wants to talk with you again.(Sometimes you need to cast two magic missiles, but it's still same tactic with interrupting her spells) Tell her that you will help her, get back the Bowl of Water Elemental control and avenge her mother.

Now run back down to the AR1400. Follow the beach again and stay clear of ankhegs. Talk with the three fishermen, and get the bowl.

SIDENOTE. They will turn hostile after this and run away, Kill Sonner (The blue one) with two magic missiles or one and a sling shot. You will get 35 experience, no reputation loss and you can pick up 150-180 gold along with a flail +1.

So after getting myself a brand new flail +1, And some gold. I ran back up the beach and entered the bridge zone, yet again. Spoke with Tenya, Got myself 2500 (!) Experience for a very easy quest. And i am now level 3, with 12 health.

5211/10 000 Experience

I can right now memorize six level 1 spells, and two level 2 spells. I have not learned any level 2 spells, so have to get to high hedge for that. Now i'm going to get to beregost, and the areas around it. Looking forward to fighting silkie without cheesing (Charming) Her!

Ran through High Hedge, Down to the fort with the mage in the south east of the zone. Fought the three gnolls on the east side of it, Easy win with sleep and sling / Magic missile. Picked up Perdue's short sword, For his quest in beregost.

Entered the High Hedge fort, ran and spoke to the mage to make the golems Neutral. I will fight them later on, But not right now as they are resistant to magic. And i need to use a weapon (Dagger of venom) to kill them. If you want to kill them it is possible to lure them out from the house and do run + sling. But i'm not going to do that, would ruin the challenge of fighting some of the only magic resistant mobs in the game. I sold some items (Along with the flail +1 i picked up) I used a friends spell to boost my charisma up to 24 and bought the following spells ->

Mirror image, Level 2 (224 gold)
Horror, Level 2 (224 gold)
Strenght, Level 2 (224 gold)
Invinsibility, Level 2 (224 gold)
Hold person, Level 3 (336 gold)
Skull trap, Level 3 (336 gold)

Cost me 1568 gold.

Next i moved to AR3800, South of beregost (Under it). Went to the middle of the map, entered a cave for 5 healing potions, and killed a green looking hobgoblin for a pair of boots (Boots of stealth) That i will give to a halfling in beregost. The hobgoblin is in a group below the cave, but he is the closest one so you can lure him alone. Moved east from the cave to the main road, and followed the road north. Met two ogrillas, used sleep, magic missile and sling to kill them. Picked up a ring and a scroll from them, The scroll i will give in exchange to a woman in beregost for experience and a ring of protection +1.

Now i Finnaly Entered Beregost. First thing i did was run and give the book to Firebeard, at his house across the street from Feldepost's Inn. Got myself 300 experience, reputation +1 and a book. Next i entered Feldepost's Inn, And talked Marl out of fighting for a good 900 experience (1-1-3-3-1) . After this i spoke to the Innkeeper, and rested. Ran to the Burning Wizard's tavern, at the center of Town. And gave the boots of stealth to Zhurlong, The Kleptomanic Thief that stole money from us. I got the money he stole from me back, along with 100 gold and 300 experience.

Next i ran to Red Sheaf tavern (The building silkie is infront of) . And i fought Karlat.

Karlat 1/5 Difficulty, Dwarf Bounty Hunter in Red Sheaf Inn. 270 experience.

I used mirror Image before talking to him, And then used Horror when he got hostile (He is immune to sleep). While he was in Panic and ran around, I killed him with sling shots and Magic missiles. It's an easy fight. Use sling as long as he is in panic, use magic missiles when he is back to normal.

Spoke to the halfling in the very same building (Perdue) and gave him his short sword. Got 500 experience and 50 gold. I rested up and then went to give in the scroll to the lady (House above Thunder Hammer smithy). She gave me a ring of protection +1, And 300 experience. Next up is the spider house, And it is left of Jovial Juggler Tavern.

House with 4 spiders Difficulty 2/5, It's about luck on sleep / Horror spell. 1080 experience (270*4)

For this fight i had Theese spells memorized.

4 Magic missile.
2 Sleep.
1 Mirror image.
1 Horror.

I begun with using mirror image outside the house, Then when i entered i threw a sleep. I got two of them sleeped, so i shot with my sling at the ones sleeping while dodging the other two, shortly after i used the second sleep spell. Three were asleep now, One following me. used sling on the ones asleep, Magic missiles on the one following me. I killed the one following me with 2 magic missiles, used the rest on the sleeping ones. When sleep was over, one of them was left with Badly injured. I used Horror, and killed him with my sling while he ran around the room.

Looted the boots, wine bottle and the dead spider from this house. And exited, Using the map to enter Friendly Arm Inn Zone. Entered the Keep, took the stairs to the top floor and spoke to the Gnome there. Gave him all three items, and got ->

300 experience, 120 gold.
200 experience, 100 gold.
300 experience, 75 gold.

I am now level 4, got a new level 1 and 2 spell slot. And i have 16 health.

Went back to beregost, to take care of the last thing i have left there, Silkie.

Silkie 2/5 Difficulty, Can be a challenge if you don't know her spell pattern. 900 experience.

She will use ->

Improved (?) Invinsibility (Have to interrupt)
Lightning bolt (Can survive with luck, And a save)
Lightning bolt (Can survive with luck, And a save)
Magic missile (5 missiles, So need them all to be on 3 damage except one, which have to be 2 . To survive)
Magic missile (5 missiles, So need them all to be on 3 damage except one, which have to be 2 . To survive)

I used ->

6 Magic missile
2 sleep (She is immune, but got enough magic missile)
2 Mirror Image
1 Horror

I put up Mirror image before i spoke with her.

She begun with Invinsibility which i had to interrupt with magic missile. After that i threw horror, She saved and threw a lightning bolt which one of my mirror images soaked up. My next magic missile interrupted her second lightning bolt. She used magic missile when my mirror image ran out, lucky for me the numbers were low (2-2-3-3-3) so had 3/16 health left. Even with a new mirror image, i only have 3 images so her next magic missile would have killed me. So i went all out, and cast magic missile. Luckily, It interrupted her magic missiles and i fired one sling shot, critical hit 6 damage and she died.

I looted of her ->

400 gold (300 normally, she will offer 400 if your charisma is 18 or higher)
Quarter staff +1
Potion of Invulnerability

I went to talk with the 3 thugs, and got a Potion of defense from them.

Now beregost is cleared, And my stats are the following .

Level 4 Diviner (11 864 / 20 000)
AC - 5
Health - 16

Weapon - Sling, Dagger +1, Quarter staff +1.
Armor - None
Rings - Ring of Protection, Ring of Wizardry

Potions - 7 Potions of healing, 6 antidotes, 1 Potion of defense, 1 Potion of Invulnerability.
Scrolls - Monster Summoning II, Magic missile, Armor, Grease.

Gold - 3172

And now here you have the start of my Adventure, With a solo Diviner and the restrictions i'm using. It's a quick guide to level 4, how to do it as a solo mage without cheese. I might end up updating more of my progress, Depending on if people are interested. I'm not going to spam my progress if no one reads it or answers, Feel free to ask me any questions or ask me to fight a certain group. And i will do so, Or write up the fight if i have done so. I will continue to play with my Diviner, Clear areas and such.

And that's it for me!
