I found a pretty decent defragmentation software while browsing the Witcher's official forums and it's called Auslogics Disk Defrag. They have the free and purchase edition.

P.S. Their other software are also free but only their XP theme modifying software is a trial.

I don't suppose anyone has ever stumbled across a program that will press keys for you at adjustable intervals?

 :D .....not cheating just optimizing....!!!

Serious note....not to my knowledge....but if such a program existed Joe05 could probably put it to use...it would help with his Morrowind gaming...

A few posts have been removed. Guys, please let's remember that this is meant to be a list, not a spam/humorous thread. Thanks.

I have been using Paint.NET, a free image editing program, for the past few months and I find it pretty good. :)

P.S. Sorry for bumping an old thread.

I just found a Firefox addon that makes this thread worth a bump :D

ReminderFox is perfect for somebody as forgetful as me :D

It's not a full fledged calendar, but it puts a discreet little reminder knot on your tool bar that you can configure for each entry as you wish.

From the description:
ReminderFox displays and manages lists of date-based reminders and ToDo's. ReminderFox does not seek to be a full-fledged calendar. In fact, the target audience is anybody that simply wants to remember important dates (birthdays, anniversaries, bills, etc) without having to run a whole calendar application. ReminderFox makes sure you remember all of your important dates via easy-to-use lists, alerts, and alarm notifications.

I had been using thesaurus.com when in need of an electronic thesaurus, but the site has gotten way too advert heavy, to the point that you can't see much else..
So, I did some searching around and found Word Web. It works great, cross-references, can also be used as a dictionary and just sits on your tool bar.
It also works both offline and online.

I have been seeing this forum and refreshingly most people here contribute something or the other. For past few days I have been trying to collect good freeware under a blog. I would appreciate if you can see it and recommend good links to be included. Thanks and advance to all .

Three wonderful programs that I use to keep my computers spyware (and problem free):

CCleaner: deletes all of the junk from your harddrive (temporary files, remnants of files and so forth) effectively freeing up a good ammount of space (I've seen it go as high as 5GB). It also comes with a registry fix utility. Has a few others tools as well, such as an uninstaller.

Spybot Search and Destroy: A very good program for getting rid of spyware. It also comes with an "Immunize" utility, which as it sounds, imminizes your computer against a huge number of spyware.

Malware Bytes: I've started using this program only recently, but I like it. It does what it suggests: purges your computer of Malware. I've yet to explore this one fully however.

Thought I should make mention of a new, very powerful anti-spyware program with the highly original name of:
SuperAntiSpyware

The free proggy doesn't have a real-time scanner, or a number of other features available in the paid version. However, the scanner is very good, and if you are already using something like Spyware Blaster (linked somewhere above), along with an effective AV, you are in pretty good shape.

Another ginormous list of freeware can be had at this site. I've found some of them to be pretty useful. For example Macrium Reflect for cloning my hard drive (compatible with both xp and vista), CCleaner for clearing internet history and temporary files quickly and easily, as well as fixing your registry which can get incredibly cluttered for an old machine like mine. And Foxit Reader a nifty PDF reader software that is a fraction of the Adobe Acrobat size.

Similar in function to CC Cleaner, another utility I've been quite impressed by recently is: Advanced System Care

Request: Mrs. Tricky and I are looking for ways to stay in touch with each other over the internet. I bought a microphone and webcamera yesterday, but I don't really know what programs to use. Can anyone recommend anything? I don't want to see banners all the time, but I'm not keen on paid services either. Quality freeware would be very good.

Also..

I was just reminded that I did indeed find a program like that. Autohotkey requires a little scripting if you want anything done, but the possibilities are endless. From making it type auto AFK messages for you, to interval-potion chucking (as long as you can bind the action to a certain key). There's all kinds of scripts examples available for you to work with.

Nope, I haven't. I figured it was more commercial since it is so well known, but I'm checking it out now. Still open to try out other, less known programs.

Edit:

Checked it out. While it does function nicely, the video feed is pretty bad. It's no slideshow, but I'm supposed to be on broadband here. Do you know of any programs that will allow two people to talk/webcam on a direct, 1-on-1 line?

Try Yahoo, which is what I use for webcams. Also, although it's on the more techy side, consider using VOIP (Voice Over IP). I know that you can set up a webcam with it, though I haven't tested it myself.

You could also check out Gmail voice and video chat.
I haven't used it myself, but it looks pretty straightforward from what I can tell.

As far as I know VOIP is a protocol, not a program. Aren't all of these programs supposed to make use of VOIP?

You really saved us last night. She couldn't get Skype to function and when I tried to install MSN for their video chat service, I had to abort. It wanted to install all kinds of Windows Live nonsense that I don't want anywhere near my computer. We came this close to 'resorting' to an actual phonecall. :)

Once again Google comes out victorious.

Geek heaven for all the IT people out in internetland.

UBCD for Windows

From the site

UBCD4Win is a bootable recovery CD that contains software used for repairing, restoring, or diagnosing almost any computer problem. Our goal is to be the most complete and easy to use free computer diagnostic tool. Almost all software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows®. Some of the tools inlcuded are "free for personal use" copies so users need to respect these licenses. A few of the tools included in UBCD4Win are paid for and licensed software owned by UBCD4win

It is a bit large, coming at last count of just over 250Mb but its worth to always have one lying around.
