Soloing the game

Post by Kaos »

I've been playing Baldur's Gate II since it came out pretty much and I thought it would be nice to try playing the game through with just one character for a challenge. I've tried some classes and got decently far with thief.

What I am wondering is, is it actually possible to solo the game with any other class than thief (or such in dual-class etc.). I tried some others but it was quite hard trying to get through locks and traps :P

And if you'd have any other tips for a solo-noob like me, I'd love some!

There are really dozens of threads on this topic, please look for them.
Specific questions may require a new thread.
Sage plays a paladin,
because other classes would be frowned upon for laying their hands on a wounded companion

Yeah I've been reading these forums for some time but honestly I just don't have the patience to look through pages and pages of topics and then read each topic I find. I'd rather get to playing ASAP :P

Edit: Also I didn't really find that recent topics on the matter and most are about quite specific questions unlike mine which is about the concept of soloing all together, if you have some good topics you can of course give me a link and I'll shut up.

You can solo the game with a character of any class or multiclass. Strategy differs greatly from class to class. I find it helpfull to make a list of equipement that is most imortant for my solo character to be successful and I try to collect these things as soon as possible. Personally if you haven't soloed I would go with a versitle muliclass character the first time through like: Cleric/Ranger, Fighter/Theif, Fighter/Mage, something with alot of versitilty but also packing some punch.

Once you decide what class your character will be search the forum to reflect it ex: "Solo Cleric/Ranger" You'll get plenty of specific strategy tips this way, although its much more fun to just pick a character and learn as you go.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

Good tips although still my primary question stands, how do you properly solo with anything than thief/multi-classed thief :P How to get through all those locks/traps etc. with lets say cleric/ranger?

There are no traps you've to disarm and no locks you've to pick in the game.

There are many ways around/through traps. Also there are other ways to deal with locks. Just imagine how many you could simply bash open with Crom and your 25 strength.

Yeah but its somehow easier to get through if you can actually open all those caskets and get rid of those traps :)

But I guess I can just try to avoid them.

If you really feel the need to open all chests you can always solo as a mage with knock. While having 25 strength does let you bash most chests open, it certainly leaves a good amount of them unopened still.

Well I guess I can live with some unopened chests :)

If you really must open everything, then play as either a multi class theif or a multi class mage. Fighter/Theif is relatively easy and alot of fun Cleric/Theif is also a very interesting character. Fighter/Mage or Cleric/Mage are also good options.

I tried a Cleric/Thief and that character has a lot of THAC0 issues, even when fully buffed. Just keep that in mind.
