The Incredible Bouncing Talon Company Merc?

First let me just say that I have NOT finished Fallout 3 yet, so I don't want any spoilers.

I just fast traveled to Fort Bannister (After having already cleared it out earlier) on my way to

Vault 87 to find a GECK
. On a side note I had Charon in my party. Several Talon Company Mercs had respawned there so Charon and I killed them easily. One with a missile launcher had crippled my head during the fight, but I was not experiencing blurred vision or problems targeting, so I didn't think it necessary to repair it quite yet. The last merc was shooting at me with a Chinese Assault Rifle from far away, so I took out my hunting rifle and shot at his head through VATS. The animation played out and he died. As soon as he did die and the animation stopped My vision blurred and I heard a very loud wooshing noise. The Talon Company Merc immediatly bounced 10 feet into the air, then started bouncing all over the place. He eventually smashed into the side of a hut and stopped, halfway buried in the ground. The wooshing sound had continued and my vision was still blurred, and when I looked up I saw a black blob. I immediatly used a stimpack on my head, but the black shape disapeared before my vision cleared. My question is was this a

vertibird I've been hearing about so much on GNR, and the Merc's corpse was pushed away by the engines or something
, or was it simply a glitch that I have tried to make sense of WAY too hard?
It takes 43 muscles to frown and only 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face
