NPC Quest Time Limits

Post by Blackraven. »

Hello all,

I've search the forum and the web but I couldn't find what the time limits actually are. I haven't played BG in years, but I remember unpleasant consequences to not finishing NPC Quests in time (Minsc :( ) which I rather not repeat. Does anyone know what the NPC quest time limits are? Are they all the same?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what the time limits are but I think the NPCs generally grumble a couple of times before they leave or get angry. Mind you I recently played a game where Kivan had joined my party but I then kicked him out for a while. When I went to get him back he said he didn't have anymore time to waste and just walked off. It was a bit of a shame because I always enjoy hearing him and Viconia arguing.

Well I guess I could ask a more specific question for now. When I meet the two guys in the first area, will I have time to go to friendly arm, then go to nashkel? I'm very thorough when going through areas. (Hopefully that's not too spoilerish)

I'm still interested to know the actual values are though.

Yes, Xzar and Montoran shouldn't get too upset if you go to the Friendly Arm and then head to Nashkel clearing the different wilderness area's as you go. I wouldn't try to do all the Berigost quests on the way though, because then you may run out of time. I actually never remember them leaving my party but I usually hit Nashkel on day 3 at the latest. I think Minsc may have the shortest timer because his quest is a rescue quest after all.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

Xzar and Montaron will remind you about their quest for the first time after seven days, I think after 14 days Xzar gives you ultimatum to go to Nashkel or they leave. Then I think you have another seven days to reach Nashkel, so you have plenty of time.I'm quite sure about that because in of my previous playings I travelled for a long time with them.

Thanks guys!

Any info on the other NPC quests? Do you think it's always two game weeks?

Many NPCs you pick up don't have their own quest (unless you're using mods).

There may be some spoilers below:
I think that Minsc's / Edwin's quest should be completed before two weeks because it's about saving a life /killing someone.

Shar-Teel, Garrick, Xan, Yeslick, Dynaheir, Faldorn, Branwen, Kivan, Ajantis, Tiax, Quayle, Alora, Viconia and Skie (partially) don't have their own quests.

Coran has a quest about wyvern hunting, but I don't know what's the limit, because I always do it when in Cloakwood.

I know that Safana has a quest which is probably limited, but I don't know for how long because it can be solved in the same area where you find her, so it shouldn't take too long to solve it.

Eldoth has a quest, but you can't even start doing it until chapter six, but I guess there's a time limit after that.

Kagain has a minor quest (which is expanded in one mod, called NPC Project), but it can also be done in the nearby area.
*** Spoilers ***

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but IIRC, Minsc's quest of rescuing Dynahier from the Gnoll Stronghold is ten days, which starts as soon as he is added to your party for the first time.

If you haven't rescued Dynahier from the Gnoll Stronghold by the 10 day mark, then Minsc becomes hostile and gets medieval on your arse, and your only recourse is to smoke him and Boo.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

I never had any problem with Minsc trying to leave because I alwasy wanted to do those couple of area's between the mines and the knoll stronghold before the mines themselfs. They are easy and generally level everyone up once or twice and also offer some nice items especially early in the game.
