Diablo III engine got me thinkin'

Post by ashtaal »

Okay so I am sure you've all seen and drooled over the Diablo III movies. Now, imagine if Baldur's Gate III was made with that engine or a very similar engine. Isn't that what you've always dreamed about!??? How good would it be!!!! :D

If it was made in Diablo III's image, then I doubt I'd get it. If anything, I'd have it made using the Infinity Engine again, but that won't happen.

The engine they use is similar to the engine in Baldurs gate Dark Alliance, and those two games were terrible.

But if they made it with D&D rules and not custom weird rules inspired by D&D, then it could work. Seems like a pretty solid engine to me.

Dark Alliance wasn't that bad

Okay I am a huge Baldur's Gate fan and played table top DnD for ages back in the 80s and early 90s, so I understand why people didn't like Dark Alliance...but I thought they weren't bad, it was fun to play with a friend and the item creation system was cool too. Yeah they were not much like the real Baldur's Gate but were just something different.

What I'm suggesting with the Diablo III engine would be of course a traditional Baldur's Gate ie., very story driven, same battle engine and modeled on the true DnD rules with a party etc., but with THOSE graphics. It would be awesome. :D

Same. The 2D images was just perfect in the past BG games, it's what gave the game that extra "feel" to it. In my opinion.

Same here. Hated NWN after playing IWD & BG. 2D is the best.

I agree, i can honestly say that i prefer 2D over 3D - Only for games like Baldur's Gate III of course, it's not my generel opinion. The game will not be true to it's predecessors now that it goes 3D, but then again, it would never be attrative to new players if it stayed in the old fashion, so i guess we will all have to get used to it.

I too prefer 2D but from what I've seen from the diablo trailers I don't think I would be terribly bothered if they decided to use the diablo engine. the only thing I'd want to change would be the distance from which you view, it's to close in my opinion. I don't want the characters to be that detailed, I liked being able to make my own vision of how they looked based on the portraits that came with them.

I also hope that if they ever get around to releasing this game that they atleast keep the interface look, I despise the NWN interface and never got around to finishing that game because of just that reason.

Why do you hate the NWN interface?

Ashtaal, why do you think a 3D engine would be better than a 2D one if anybody should ever make a BG3?

Game graphics = a type of art. it is like a drawing. latest technology can probably put overwhelming details upon a 1mm square of space. sure it would certainly look extremely detailed, but it can still be ugly. yet a drawing with just a couple of clean pencil strokes can be very beautiful. i have yet to see a 3D game that is "beautiful" to be honest... a 3D game that has the artistic approach like BG has accomplished in 2D.

Game makers in recent years are too obsessed with details and visual effects to the point where they don't even know what "good graphics" are anymore. lifeless graphics, large textures spamming, hollow atmosphere, and also the unintelligent writings and dialogues... courtesy of all those who think that putting every bit of detail on a character is good graphics.

2D games are less detailed, but most of them have that artistic approach like i said. It is such a shame that nobody appreciate 2D games anymore. there ain't gonna be good games like Baldur's Gate series, Planescape : Torment, Fallout series anymore. these games are what i call perfection. if somebody's gonna make BG3 in 3D. i guarantee it would turn out like fallout 3 which is no doubt a piece of garbage and breaks the heart of every true players out there who appreciate the beauty of 2D.

ah yes but with all these...
BALDURPLAYER wrote:i prefer 2D over 3D.
with all these never winter night comments - ah diablo 3 looks a hell of a lot better than nwn imho..so it would be awesome to do..:speech::mischief:

p.s. to the person who mentioned fall out 3 that is more 3d than diablo 3..and actually I think you need to compare an RPG with an RPG - like for example...oblivion too long too drawn out and I couldn't follow most of the quests half the time..even with cheats it was hard as hell to complete and I haven't gotten back to it ..don't feel the need to either..I want the same old rugged baldur's but if it were 3d like diablo 3 that would look awesome...imho however blend it with 2d there is such a thing as 2d and 3d.

to the person who said it was too zoomed in ..make it an option to zoom up to make it look more 2dish O:???? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI-WvgNOCls

and when I say zoom up I mean zooming out but going upward like warcraft 3..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bUi1BYD ... re=related

the game does have variety (:

so with all the 2d and 3d arguments if you look at warcraft 3 they are combined.. O.o however I'd want baldurs to look a hell of a lot better than that flopsy game warcraft 3 was okay but not my taste O:

I'm hoping for 2D graphics. It wont lag(My computer enjoys laging me, evil demon-tech), short load/save time(NWN2's bane), it can still look very nice(PS:T, IWD2, BG2), and it's easier to make the game larger, rather than "prettier"(Too many examples).
