Getting the game to work

Post by Fyrendos »

I have for sometime now been playing Icewind dale, and somewhere along my path i found out that i wanted to play a game with a solid story. So i turned to Baldurs gate, which i had in a four disc version containing:
Baldurs Gate
Baldurs Gate: Tales of the sword coast
Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldurs Gate II: Throne of Bhaal

Here is the problem:
I installed the game at maximum, and when i ran the .exe file, it told me that the game could only run on an english operating system. As i am danish my operating system is also working in danish.
The solution here seems quite simple, i could reinstall my system on english, but i would much rather choose any other possible way.

Any suggestions? thanks in advance!

A fine choice. And allow me to introduce Planescape:Torment for your solid story needs. Later, try Fallout 1 & 2.

I wonder if there's a patch (a danish-version patch, perhaps?) that would solve your current issue.

Maybe try the forums at bioware.com. Those forums have a bit more traffic for this old'ish (but superb-y'ist) game.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

BG is good for flat mainstream entertainment, but if you play for story better play Planescape:Torment. Especially the BG2 story is depth-faking nonsense.

For getting the BG games to work on your computer I'd try installing the latest patches, maybe it will change something.

I had the same problem with the new 4 disc version. Everything worked fine except Tales of the Sword Coast and I couldn't work out which patch I needed for that.

I agree with CFM, you will probably be able to find someone to help you on the bioware boards, but if you want to start playing in the meantime then I think you will find that the original Baldur's Gate will play okay. You can always add Tales of the Sword Coast at a later date. The new areas it adds are only really suitable for higher level parties so you can play a lot of the original game before you need to instal it.

Just to add something to my previous comment, I don't think just installing the English language version will solve this. I think the problem is that you have a disc designed for the UK rather than the European market and so you will need to find the correct patch to overcome this.

I must admit I gave up in frustration when trying to do this and went back to using the old six disc set I bought years ago.

Sorry I can't be more help.

A new download has been posted at Sorcerer's Place that I think should fix this problem: Sorcerer's Place - Baldur's Gate Editors, Hacks & Trainers
