noob questions

I'm sure these things are addressed elsewhere but I can't seem to find satisfactory answers. First, is Geralt's pack as small as it seems? If so, is there a way to pick up and sell extra swords/axes/daggers/etc.? Also, what items are even worth carrying? Food takes up a lot of space, as does potion/oil/bomb reagents and bases. Then to try to keep the various flowers/rings/girly bribe items completely exhausts all available space, making it very difficult to hold onto enough stuff at once to actually play the game. And since all unkept items disappear, you can't even go back to retrieve missed loot. I understand that unlimited space is unrealistic, which is a strong suite in this game, but this tiny satchel is ridiculous! Second, why does Geralt get ambushed so often? He puts his sword away all the time and then gets smacked a dozen times before he can get it out again. Is there a way to keep him permanently ready? Finally, is there an all-purpose merchant that will buy a majority of Geralt's goods, or is everyone a specialist?

Witchers believe in travelling Light (in terms of weight), and even once in-game mentions he preffers hunting (could be food as much as monsters), so yes, a small satchel would be correct.

Until Chapter 5, you can also keep your bases in the Greater Storage box held by inkeepers. Also good for the gifts.

What to keep? Personal Prefference. I tend to keep the best Dagger I can find in the barkeep's box until I get the final armor upgrade, as

it allows you to hold 2 small weapons, instead of one that is normal.
In cities & villages, Geralt only draws when under attack, the weapons & spells are not usable. In the Wilderness, that's player error (reffering to the gets whacked a dozen times before drawing a weapon). In wilderness areas & Dungeons/caves, look around first. I've got caught by this myself, so I know how it feels.

So, it looks like gold will be a bit hard to come by, no problem... I hope. Thankfully innkeepers are all connected so I can get my stored items anywhere.

Any general merchants that buy the misc. stuff?

Gold is a little hard to come by at first, but not because of weapons - they're just not much of a source of gold anyways. There are plenty of other things to sell - you can get more money for a book than a dagger.

The only general merchant that comes to mind is Julian in act four. Other than that merchants are mostly divided up into specialties.

So who buys books?! The person I bought them from didn't, so I just dropped them thinking that once I read them they were useless.

Book merchants will buy them, there's a dwarf in Chapter two and a merchant in the market in Chapter three, I believe, and you shouldn't need books after chapter three. I highly advise keeping and selling books, as they're worth quite a bit of gold.

There are a couple of tricks to getting Geralt to keep his weapon drawn for longer periods, although you can't have him walking around constantly with a naked sword.

As long as his medallion indicates that there are enemies in proximity, he will hold his weapon when you draw it. So, for high density monster areas (like the swamp) the key is to keep him moving. Once a battle is complete, if you let him stand still for too long, then he'll sheath his sword.

In order keep from getting whacked by a bad guy before you can draw, simply keep your camera angle wide enough to see movement on the edge of visible range. When you mouse over an enemy and it turns red, he'll draw his sword automatically in attack mode when you click. Then run up and start swinging.

I have one question

In act 1. i have the Aard sign highlighted, and useable, then i hear a sound in game and the sign is no longet highlighted and useable. can anybody tell me why this is?

You're not allowed to use your signs in certain places, like in towns during the day. That's probably the problem.
