Wand of Wonder?

Post by Thing »

After killing Alhoon in the Mind Flayers area of the sewers I have acquired the Wand of Wonder. It's decribed as a wand that produes random effects. In a way it sounds fun, but can probably produce as many problems as solutions...

Has anyone used it and could they share their experience?

It's a great and useful want. If memory serves, it has five effects:

Web
Fireball
Stinking Cloud
And Lightning Bolt

If your wand's target is an object, such as a chest, or a dropped item, your character will cast all four spells in quick succession, using only one charge.

I'm pretty sure that there's a Stoneskin and Haste somewhere as well, but they're not part of the alternate fire sequence.

I think it does more than that. I've given enemies Mino Globes of invulnerability...

I think it does random effects, *plus* wild magic like effects.

To be fair I've never had huge issues with it killing me, or horribly boosting the enemy. It's just good clean fun! :D

There are eight effect with the WoW:

1. Fireball 12%
2. Lightning Bolt 12%
3. Haste on target 12%
4. Petrify Target 12%
5. Stinking Cloud 12%
6. Web 12%
7. Increase target strength by 4 14%
8. Stoneskin on target 14%

So 60% are 'good', as long as you're not in the area of effect, or in the case of petrification you don't want what the target is carrying. I've read somewhere that a wild mage is more likely to get a 'good' effect, I haven't been able to verify this though.

Thanks to all for the quick replies. On balance there dosn't seem to be any real advantage to using the wand if you already have the spells available via your mage(s), scrolls or wands. I guess the element of "suprise" (good or bad) is what it's about.

In my opinion, the wand is intended for other classes that can use wands, such as a Monk. I usually try to go for the Stoneskin effect in that case. Nonetheless, the four consecutive spell cast is pretty powerful in SoA.

The wand of wonder what a great and terrifying weapon. I used once and it saved my teams collective butt by petrifying a dragon. It's a great wand to have if you are out of spells or out of ideas or just want to throw some chaos into a fight. Lots of fun to have for a more chaotic battle.

The funniest thing I've heard in a long time. I thought dragons have insane magic resistance and saving throws.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

I've never once used this wand. I always keep it around but never use it.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)
