NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kenyan man's offer of 40 goats and 20 cows for Chelsea Clinton's hand in marriage may still be on the table – and Hillary Rodham Clinton has promised to convey the "very kind offer" to her daughter.

To laughter at a town hall meeting Thursday in Kenya, CNN's Fareed Zakaria asked the U.S. Secretary of State if the Clintons had made a decision on the dowry offer. In 2000, a Kenyan man wrote to then-president Bill Clinton offering the animals in accordance with African tradition.

After a pause, Clinton said, "My daughter is her own person, very independent, so I will convey this very kind offer."

Clinton has denied rumors that her daughter, 29, is planning to get married this summer.

Given the current state of the world economy, I bet you can buy a pretty good relationship with 40 goats and 20 cows. Of course, they have to be good goats and cows. Just ordinary garbage-eating goats and moolie cows won't do.

Could you accept the cows, get married and get a divorce the next day? And keep the dowry of course. :p

This is a bride price, not a dowry. /nitpick

And I don't know if they have divorce in Kenya. They got lions and tigers, but divorce? Dunno.

Also: pretty awesome.

Indeed. I can breed the goats and cut up the cows into tiny cubes. Then sell the lot for a huge profit.

I can't do that to a woman now, can I? Plus, cows don't file lawsuits

What's the difference between dowry and bride price?

They have divorce in Kenya, but how common it is and on what grounds it is accepted, vary with region, culture and religion. I think the average divorce rate for the entire population is 4%. However, like in all African countries, there are many different tribes and thus many different cultures and religions that live in the constructed nation called Kenya. In cultures where dowries are still paid, the bride's family would have to pay the dowry back if the bride later decides to leave her husband.

Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.
