Two roads diverged--which to choose? (spoilers)

No way to discuss this without spoilers.

So I got through Spellhold (with a lot of chaos and luck at the end) and now that vampire-infatuated pirate wants me to go with him to the elf town to chase Irenicus.

Or, I could (apparently) just go through the portal to the Underdark directly. I am sufficiently spoiled to know the Underdark is a big deal and I don't want to miss it. The game is pretty clearly nudging me to go to the elf town right now and I'm 99% sure I won't miss anything in the long run by going. But, against the small chance that I got confused:

Will I miss anything important if I go with the pirate to pursue Irenicus at the elf town?

Short answer: use Saemon's aid.

Long answer: USE SAEMON'S AID DAMNIT!

Just do it, there is literally no downside.

You'll be happier going with Saemon. Just trust us.

It's better to go with Saemon since:

1) He's proven to be trustworthy since he only cheated you 100 percent of the time.
2) Since Irenicus has stolen your soul it's better not to follow him in order to get it back and to continue dying slowly instead. :(
3) Trying to roleplay or to act based on logic in BG2 will get you severely punished.

Saemon is not trustworthy, but Bioware was (at that time), and they want you to select him. :) Not that anything wrong will occur with the other, but...
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Ok, I went with Saemon. Got to the point where we all needed a translator and now I must to bed.

I'm kinda starting to like Saemon. I'll still kill him if I get the chance (with joy sir!), but he's entertaining in the meantime.

In a strange way you had your chance. He can actually be killed after the conversation with the GithYankee captain, not that it would stop him being miraculously resurrected if Bioware intended that mind; but I do find it immensely satisfying in a very childish way! :D
