DS vs NWN
I have been waiting for a new game to come out that will motavate me to buy a new computer. It was going to be Planetside but that has been pushed back to 03. The next question is DS or Neverwinter? The first roleplaying game I got into was DD back in the 3 lil paper book days. Then I moved on to Rune Quest becase it had a much better rule system. Now if I play NWN I will be going back to a rule system I never could stand, abet a new ed of it. TSR is the people who thought orcs looked like pigs! Not in this life time!

NWN vs. DS
If you decide to buy DS, you'll have plenty of time to play it before NWN hits the shelves. The folks who are greatly anticipating NWN (I'm intrigued by it, but not obsessed), are probably very interested in NWN's GM options. It promises to allow creative people to create their own campaigns through which to lead players. DS is more of an action-oriented hackfest. In the end, it really just depends on what kind of games you like.

I hope you are a Diablo fan, or you might be dissappointed. This game is not a CRPG, no branching dialog and the extent to which you can customize your character is extremely limited (basically you'll probably play with fighters, mage's of one of two schools and archers ... mixing and matching does not make a whole lot of sense). There's no leveling, skillpoints, whatever ... you simply advance in skills and stats through how you combat things (theres only a very small set of skills, melee, the 2 forms of magic and ranged combat are singular skills ... no differentiation between different forms of weapons for instance).
Its hack and slash and item gathering basically, completely linear.
It runs well enough on low end graphics card though, although I dont know how CPU effects things.

Yes, I rather expect that DS will appeal to fans of Diablo-type games. The nice thing about Diablo is that it offered a fast-paced game with some RPG elements. This offered gamers with shorter attention spans the opportunity to enjoy some semblance of character development and item collecting while thrashing bad guys in a real-time environment.
DS offers the same kind of thing. Believe it or not, many gamers are bored by the Baldur's Gate-style dungeon crawls that require a pretty big time investment to see any kind of payoff in terms of character leveling, etc. Many people want to see their characters quickly become more powerful and acquire new items and move toward the goal of whipping up on the biggest bad guy in the game.
Again, this is where Diablo really offered a lot to these kinds of gamers. As you played through the game, you knew exactly where you were going and you knew you were going to have to have a pretty tough character to survive the journey and succeed in the final battle.
In true RPGs you often find yourself stumbling around searching for clues about what it is you're supposed to be doing. The pace, compared to the more action-oriented slugfests, is plodding. Some gamers just can't handle this.
I'm one of those rare people who likes both types of games. What disappointed me most about the BG series is not that is was slower paced or that it followed AD&D rules, but that I was force-fed a predetermined story. I didn't want this. I wanted my character to stumble into a story that revolved around a plot, not a character. I don't like games that tell my character who he is. I want my actions in the game to determine that.

most D2 and BG2 fans like myself are pretty disappinted with DS as a potential replacement for D2 or BG2. DS tried too hard to combine D2's action with BG2's role-playing and ended up watering down both.Originally posted by Nocturnalist
