what's with the staff fetish?

Post by Grendel »

As I slog my way through the levels I came to the realization that most of the staffs appear to require high intelligence to use. Sword and other sharp things tend to rely on strength. So the question that begs to be asked is this - how come you need high intelligence to wield a blunt stick but not a nasty sharp sword? Weird.

I guess so that Wizards are compensated for not investing too much in melee.

I agree that must be the idea in game mechanics. Still, why should a mage be able to do significant damage with a melee weapon if they are so busy studying spells anyway. Still can't grapple the conceptual reasoning in the game here. Wooden sticks are not as hard to use/have limited moves compared to eg swords so even high intelligence with a stick should not compensate for brute force and advanced weapon use.

Just a gripe I have with the combat system.

Well. With a long wooden rod you have more range over a guy with a sword. So you can quickly shove the staff between his legs and heave upwards :D :D . Ouchy.

Staffs

No staff will be as effective as a sword but being a mag is a more challenging roll. A nature mage is very weak and fight melee is usfull to only regain mana. Health recouvery is good to.

I have played melee characters and they can get so powerfull that nothing affects them. How is that interesting? My most recent fighter has 2146 armor, 945 max hit and over 13000 in health. Nothing, nobody, no trap can affect me. I don't carry any potion and when I've joined PVP the host kicks me off becuase I kill them and thay can't kill me. Makes this game boring in melee.
