Your opinions

Post by fable »

The game's been out a good while, now. Touted as the best thing since sliced bread by the critics, I was just wondering how you felt about it after playing the game. Did it hold up to the hype? Was it merely okay? Was it too long, or just long enough? Too repetitive? Extremely clever? Your opinions, please. :)

I thought it was decent and the only thing that really stood out IMO were the graphics and battles sounds (although the FX kind of got repetitive after awhile).

Battle was pretty good. Each type of enemy was different and had neat special abilities. The ease of use in battle (with all the icons, the pausing, etc.) made the game easy to become accustomed to the interface. Fighting was by far (besides the graphics) one of the highlights of Dungeon Siege. My only complaint is that combat gets repetitive after awhile.

Though the character system was excellent and innovative, the gameplay suffered from the fact that it was too repetitive. Kill enemy pick up items go on. In some places it was a hassle just to get through because I felt like I wasn't making any progress and was doing the same thing over and over. It gets better after you leave the forest though :)

The length was ok, but the story was kind of "typical RPG" plot. Then again, DS is more of a hack-n-slash, so plot isn't exactly the most important thing.

Hype? Not quite, it wasn't exactly one of the greatest RPG in the modern CRPG history. Good, but not great.

The only thing that really stuck out about the game for me was the music in the beginning (as you go along, the soundtrack gets too flat for a battle) and the graphics. The visuals were by far the best part of the game, followed by combat. I'd give it a 8/10. Good but not great.

I have to agree with Z on the general rating. It is not much of a RPG even though it says it is. The RPG I guess is realized in how you decide to play (whether you favor bow, melee or magic subclasses). The engine is clearly Diablo based. I never much cared for Diablo but find this game much more acceptable. Admittedly it is a hack-fest (you do need to find hidden panels to open doors etc, but then there is usually things to hack on the other side). The variations in monsters keep it interesting though.

I have not made it through the forest yet, but am not fed up with the combat. I REALLY like the graphics. Combat looks cool and the terrain is really well done. Never get tired of that "matrix" effect where you pause the game and rotate and zoom the camera to see the melee FX. Combat sounds are good but the ambient sound track is a little annoying after a while.

The thing that really makes this work for me are the mules. I like to pick up everything and now there is a vehicle to do this. Also I have grown rather fond of my current mule. For reasons unclear to me it occassionally will loyally rush in and kick bad guys who threaten to kill off my party members.

Overall, much improved spawn of Diablo though not IMO an RPG. The game is engaging and fun and the mules rock.

To me, Dungeon Siege is a just a better looking Diablo II. The gameplay is pretty much the same: kill stuff, pick up item, go back to town, kill more stuff.

The graphics, though, are amazing. Possibly the best isometric CRPG ever, and the fact that there are no loading time is plain awesome. That option should be available in all games. The character system was good, but since the game was so repetitive, it really doesn't shine through the boredom. And since I have compared it to Diablo II, I'll say that even though it's very similar to D2, it's not as fun.

Even though I like party-based games, such as the IE games, it's just too much hassle to control more than 6+ characters plus the damn mule.

The editor for Dungeon Siege is also way too complex for the average gamer. Compared to Neverwinter Nights, the Dungeon Siege editor is a monster to tackle. However, I've seen some good mods, but it's simply too hard for the casual gamer.

On a rating of 10, I'd give Dungeon Siege a 6 or 7.

3/5 for me,

I think it's nice and good-looking but IMO, the thing that bothers me most is that it ain't THAT FUN. You basically have nothing much to do.

+ Nice graphics, great sounds, good mechanics, grat multiplayer, large world

-last chapters were boring, the whole yourney looked like - town - forest - cave and again from the begining,

I wouldn't say that Dungeon Siege is a RPG, it's more like hack&slash or somehing. Altough, I spent quite good time playing it. :)

Well after a month or so I have had a 180 on opinion. While I initially liked the game, I am now finding excuses not to play it (and choosing to work rather than play it). It is really boring. Set up the party with melee weapons, have an archer, combat mage and both nature magicians on Healing wind - then point at target and everything takes care of itself. Wander through forest and be ambushed. Wander through cave and be ambushed. Etc, etc. Too linear. And there is too much stuff. Too many weapons/shields that slightly improve performance and require constant tweaking to maintain. ..Just give me a +3 throwing axe and be done with it...

If it wasn't for the mule I would toss the thing. Not an RPG at all. Aaackk.

I bought this on it's release date and was pretty excited. It's been a bit of a let down. At this point, I'm about half way through the game. I pick it up every couple of months and put in about six hours over the course of a couple of days. Eventually, I'll finish it.

It wasn't even that fun in multiplayer.

I've played the single player version through and most of the Multi-player areas. But it is really repetitive and boring. Fun for a little while, but it's replayibility is virtually nil with me.

The graphics and music are very interesting in the beginning but they mask a game with too little content. I completely agree with Grendel's opinion on the weapons. That is so true. The editor is indeed too complex for casual gamers(me).

Trying to pinpoint exactly where DS fails for me would probably be especially in the area of character interaction. This is no Baldur's gate 2 for sure. If it was, then perhaps I would be more interested in hacking my way through the game. But since I can't seem to lose myself emotionally into the game...who cares?!

No one mentioned at which difficulty option they played the game.
I chose hard. I'm only in chapter three, but it's definitely not boring.

AHAHAHAHAHAH i loved the game....
sounds, graphics, length (in gameplay), nice storyish RPG, i loved it... when Dungeon Seige 2 comes out im expecting to be able to fight 60000 story tall dragons with my .005 story dwarves! Which will be a funny thing to happen with only the dragons toes visible to my screen if i can zoom out far enough...

What was the boses name? Gom? I wonder if he will return... if he does i want to see some more action from him... i am expecting some new crap... like you have to kill him 5 times in 5 different stages to actualy waste him... or whoever...

Ahhhh what a great game.... GET THIS GAME!!! spend your time playing... quit your job and get addicted to this game like a hungry hobo in a warehouse full of yummy pizzas and ham sandwichs
Take a halfling monk party and you'll never beat the game...
