Does race matter much?

Post by Xandax »

Got a question for the ones that have tried out WoW (danged, get that "Final Beta" open so I can try it :D ).
Does race matter much when selecting what character to play, or is it mostly "flavour".
I know they all got some traits (active and passive) and what they are - but still, how much does it matter?
I have little concept of what numbers mean in WoW yet, and what relativity there is. (for instance seen references to 4500 AC, but untill I've played the game it is impossible to know "how" good that is).

So - does race matter much at all.

/Xandax who is still trying to figure out what to play in Retail/Live :D

Race makes a bigger impact on your gaming style then it does on your character's class, I believe. A big problem I see in forums is people getting bored of their character, because they picked races and classes that they thought were good, opposed to characters that actually fitted them.

The races have different personality traits and are simuliar to many different parts of the world. Pick a style you like and stick to it. Don't be one of the people who play nightelf or undead, just because they look cool.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

No sweat - being a vivid MMORPG player for 3 years, I do know something of the (vocal) community and its behavior and reasoning, often causing me to enter the other ditch
For instance - I'll never play a rogue in WOW simply because it is likely one of the most played classes (and I generally dislike stealth classes, eventhough I played one for over 1 year in DAOC) and because of the crowd it is likely to draw to itself. I'll likewise not play undead in any form either :)

But I was still wondering - due to the statistics and racial traits - how much effect race had on class, or whether or not they are mostly cosmetic.

I have only played one char to level 18 and one to level 9 so I can't really tell you much but from my experience so far the only difference in the races are that you start at a different place in the world and hence get different starting quests. Undead are supposed to have a higher amount of HP than all the other races but besides that I think that the benefits are about equal for all races.

Acually Tauren and Dwarf have the most HP for some reason. Undead is the race with the most HP and MP regeneration.

I would think the races have make enough impact in classes to have you atleast consider which race best to use for your class, but not so much to where only a race or two excel in any one class over other races.

Picking a race is about the biggest role playing choice you make in the game.
If you want people to know your (character is) evil and cunning, pick Undead
Noble and Strong? Tauren

Savage but honourble? Orcs

Boring and stagnant? Humans

Over sexed? Definately night elves

But I digress.
