Terminology

Post by oozae »

I've heard a lot of terminology I don't understand on this forum, for example: MMOG, PvE, PvP, "leet kids", EN, RP. So could someone please explain it to me?

MMOG = Massive Multiplayer Online Game.
WoW is a MMORPG, which is a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (although limited roleplaying :D ).
MMOG is just an abbriviation that govers all the Massive Multiplayer Online games - such as EVE-Online, Anarchy Online as well as WoW.

PvE = Player vs. Envioment. This is servers where the primary form of combat is to battle the envioment - monsters (mobs - although WoW calls them creeps  ), NPCs etc

PvP = Player vs. Player. This is when players engage in some sort of combat with other players. Servers of this type in WoW means that one faction (Horde, Alliance) can attack the other at will. They can't do that on PvE servers - where the PvP rules are different. I suggest reading up on the server types to get a view of Blizzard definition of the servers.

"leet kids" is an insult used towards people that either post "leet speak" (l337, l33t) or consider themself skillfull due to for instance killing a low level character with a high level character. "Leet" is a really big topic, and the usage can be hard to explain, because it differes in various communities.
"leet kids" are in WoW also often refered to as B.net kids (battle.net).
Generally - "leet kids" is the lable for immautere people you suspect aren't very old, but still try and act as if they are "king of the hill" so to speak.

EN - Well I would guess that is for english.

RP is shorthand for roleplaying. Playing your character as you would suspect he would act in a given situations. This usually means no out of character talk in main public chat, which is the extend of roleplaying in most MMOGs.

No problem. Have played MMOGs in years - so know most of it by heart anyway :)

(oh by the way - it is Xandax with a small x at the end, not some "leet" ;) spelling like XandaX :D )

Well - most of these have less to do with MMOGs and gaming and more to do with chat-lingo so to speak.

As far as I know TTFN is some sort of short hand for "Ta ta for now" - it is rarely used in MMOGs and perhaps more so in chatting (irc for instance).

IIRC- is chat language for "if I recall correctly"

php- I'm not sure about this one, the only php I know of is the script language php which is used to make websites. So it would likely depend on what situation it is written in (remember, not all abbriviations are MMOG related ;) )

XML- Also a computer techonology. Stands for eXtended Markup Language, and is a documenttype used for exchanging data between various entities, often across the Internet.

DAoC - Dark Age of Camelot. It is a MMORPG.

RT- Dunno about this one, but if you have picked it up from GameBanshee forums, it is likely just RandomThug signing his own "name".

FB- In reference to WoW it is short hand for Final Beta. The name of the current phase of the European version of WoW.

BTW is by the way yes.
Many abbriviations comming from chatlanguage can be deciphered by looking at the contex and then deducting it from there.
It is harder with the game/genre specific terms, such as lop or lom depending on person (low on power, low on mana) and so on. But most of them would be learned during play as well :)
