Help with Duriel
Can someone please help me kill Duriel, I am fighting as Amazon and just cannot get rid of him? Any suggestions gratefully received.
Fi you don't have an act 2 merc get one and level him up to your level... Decoy or something like that might also be helpful... bring a lot of tps and be prepared to run around in cirlcels alot and going back to town to get the marc and to heal...
Duriel is really tough with a rouge so you have to be a quite high level to be able to beat him, dependng on your equip, skills and such....

You can get the merc just next to the trap door entrance to the sewers. Act 2 hierlings are the best ones for necs b/c of their aura that all your minions get

The problem with using mercs is that they don't stand a simple chance in hell against Duriel, I remember it being near impossible using my pure Bowazon and Necromancer simply because the Bowazon is slow as hell to fire any arrows when hit by his holy freeze aura.
Almost every summon and mercenary WON'T last more than one or two hits from Duriel and with my usual players 8 setting there's no chance in hell at beating him. Add to this bosses have an increased chance to hit and decreased damage from summons it's just nearly futile.
~
With a bowzon you can use decoy and try freezing him as much as possible but it'll take years, unfortunately you may have to use a skill point in the spear skill jab to actually beat the SOB.
I unfortunately have yet to beat Duriel with a pure bowazon since it's near impossible to keep a good distance and fire at him.
With the necromancer you can try using iron maiden and bone prison or bone armour. Don't use blood golem at all though, otherwise you'll just hit the floor faster than a sack of potatoes. Alteratively pack up the potions buy a spare wand with +3 to bone spear and hammer him as fast as you can while your golem distracts him. That's been my main method of defeating him.

I still say that a level two hierling is the way to go. You just have to have a bit of patience. Choose a hierling with either might or thorns, then summon all the skellies and golems you have and just start shooting bone spear at duriel. Also the equipment that the hierling uses is vital as well as his level so you might want to go and do some mf:ing so that the hierling gets up to speed with you, otherwise it's a wate of money....

On a whim I recently installed Diablo II and the new 1:10 patch, starting a Bowazon (Bow using Amazon) and I must say they've really cheesed Duriel up since I've last played (1.09D).
Using the /players 8 modifier it was fairly easy to be level 27 when I comfronted Duriel with my stats roughly 197 Hit Points and 60-70 damage very fast attack speed.
I died a total of 25 times trying to kill him, this is also after I turned off players 8 to make him a lower level or "Easier"
~
The best advice I can give to you is to try and use cold arrow and start off first by running around the outside of the arena with him following you, he'll catch up to you and try for a double swing attack. Hope like hell that he'll miss since he stands still for about a half second allowing you to get a safe two or so shots in until he starts his pursuit again. The cold effect works some what to little effect to tell the truth, since Duriel seems to have high cold resist.
Rinse and repeat for what it's worth, I tried using my pike on him with jab but he simply floored me fast, so it seemed a Bowazon is better off staying with her bow.
Also as a side note my level 2 decoys were killed in one hit and so was my 25 archer hireling. Either way as a side not Duriel seemed to do about 100 damage per hit on me, so his double swing attack was able to kill me outright.
~
There is light at the end of the tunnel though, originally the amazon had a disgusting habit of trying to dodge the Firestorm and Red lightning attacks of Diablo and that's been fixed. If you haven't got the lastest patch then I'll give you a heads up, if you get caught in either of these attacks instead of running like you're commanding her to do, the amazon will attempt to dodge the constant elemental attacks meaning you'll stand on the spot in the flames and roast while she routes 10 damage while taking a few hundred.
Diablo and Mephisto will be much easier than Duriel by the way.

Ah the good old days of 1.9D when even the most humble of people could kill Diablo. Oh well....I can't really remember how I killed Duriel with my necro, musta used minions curses n the like although he was fairly beefy and could hold his own in melee so I probably cursed him, set my minions loose nad waded in as well, withdrawing when I was getting trashed. The amazon was a lot easier as I had a good close in fighter with fair ranged skills and a merc to boot. Just try every conceivable way. I'm sure your best the bug soon enough mate.

Just to note I may have been confused and thinking about when I went through Nightmare and not Normal, if that's true then I apologize. Been a while since I did anything but Hell. lol

in my experience...
so i never found defeating duriel difficult. well, except as a paladin. blech. but as a sorceress i run directly in front of him using wake of fire spell(or whatever the one where you run and fire comes from behind u in ur path). be sure to have plently of mana and stamina potions because stopping is so not an option. except occassionally, if u have a really good staff, hit him and then continue running. it's best to use a weapon that has freeze/cold damage to slow him, or use a cold spell to slow duriel while running from him with wake of fire. always open a tp the second u get into the chamber. if ur merc dies, don't worry about it because bringing he/she back will just cost money and he/she will die again immediately anyways.
as an assassin, i use the trap wake of fire and whatever hand weapons i'm using. i went with two weapons, one in each hand. but i put the weaker of the two in my stash and bought the highest weapon i could that was socketed, then loaded it up with whatever saphires i had. blue gems. cold is vital in defeating duriel because he is so incredibly fast.

When I tried beating Duriel with my necro in normal, I must've died more than 20 times He's definitely the hardest act boss (much harder than Diablo himself imho). This worked the 21st time: when I entered the room, I immediatly casted a bone wall to stop his charge attack, followed by a clay golem (lots of points in golem mastery help a lot!) and an iron maiden curse. After that I used my weapon tab key to quickly swap between clay golem and bone spear. Occasionly I recasted iron maiden, but only directly after I resumonned my golem. I also had a Act I cold arrow merc who didn't get killed directly (unlike the other 20 tries) and lasted long enough to deal some good damage and to slow Duriel down

How To Kill Duriel
HOW TO KILL DURIEL (in Diablo 2 LOD v1.10)
{this refers to the Barbarian} I have had trouble beating Duriel as well. When I first got to him I had thoroughly explored act 2 and he killed me immediately. I knew that he was susceptable to cold attacks and had ridiculously high endurance as well as the ability to freeze you and make you dizzy. He also likes to block teleportation gates making it impossible for you to escape.
PART 1 (EQUIPMENT and STATS)
I concluded that I needed to be able to do more damage and last longer (saphires for my weapons and more vitality). I went back to the first act and played through all of the levels to get the gems and used my horadic cube to upgrade them as best I could. That didn't help me gain alot of experience though.
To gain experience I went back to the seven tombs and searched through them thorougly as though I had never been in them before (entering every room and killing every character). After running through the tombs 2 1/2 times I was up to level 25 and my merc was up to 22.
My stats were as follows: Str-77 (upgraded to 90 using charms), Dex-45, Vit-69, and Enr-14. My relevent skill for this ordeal were Level 8 for Double Swing and Level 3 or 4 for Mace mastery (passive). I was armed with two Grand Sceptor Maces. One had three sockets and in each socket was Blue Saphire. The other was a Magical Grand Sceptor and it had +75 attack rating, +19 Maximum one handed damage, +25 Maximum Damage (I got it the second time through the seven tombs). My armor for me and my merc were pretty much fully maxed out. I even had flawed skulls in my helmet and armor sockets to help me recover damage. My merc stayed on a high level because I continually brought him back to life. The saphires I used were of the Square quality. For my mercenary they were the tear drop quality. My skulls were of the flawed skull and cracked skull quality. I USED THE HORADIC CUBE TO TRANSMUTE LOW QUALITY GEMS INTO HIGHER ONES. Though I came across about one of my Square Saphires and two Tear Drop Saphires, it took no less than 21 chipped saphires over all just to equip my Mace alone.
PART 2 (METHOD)
Once I had these levels and equipment this is the strategy I used:
I enter the tomb Duriel is in and fight off all the hords previous to D's room. I use my skulls in my armor to heal (by waiting several minutes) rather than my rejuvenation potions. Then:
a) I take a thaw potion for me and my merc. I enter the room of Duriel and immediately cast a portal and run away from it to prevent Duriel from blocking my entry later.
b) On the other side of the room I attack him with double swing and as soon as my merc is dead I run in the opposite direction from the Portal to lead Duriel away from it. Then I double back into the portal. All this time I am continually using health potions to keep myself from dying. (I customized the controls so 'Space Bar'=Portal and 'B Key'=Take a Rejuvination potions).
c) I go back to Act 1 to bring my merc back to life. I get previously stored rejuvenation potions out of my stash and replace my old. I take a thaw potion for me and my merc. I go back into Duriels layer and repeat STEP A, B, and C as shown above. Rinse and repeat.
After doing this 3 times he died. It was not even hard. I was amazed considering how earlier I was only slightly weaker and less well equipped and he was whiping me out instantly. You just have to have your stats JUST RIGHT.
Although this was done with the Barbarian I imagine the same strategy would work with other characters as well (with a little tinkering).
