Magezon

Post by =SK= »

I also have a lv. 82 hardcore Magezon for US west. They are not that great at dueling but have there uses and are a necessity on cow runs (as well as a sorc) and rushing. I think they are fun to play as and different. (cmon, a Zon that needs mana? ) Im sick of making guided arrow/multi shot/ destroy everything zons.

Heres my skills layout: (basic version, not including + 8 all bow skills from itmes)

20 Freezing A.
20 Immolation A.
10-15 in Flame A. (for synergy)
10-15 in exploding A. (for synergy)
20 in valkyrie
any points you feel is neccesary for doge, avoid, evade
5 in cs (if necessary)
rest into synergies or whatever esle you'd like. (like pierce or synergies for valk, etc.)

I have immolation arrow as my main attack and summon a valkyrie as a meat shield, than i use freezing arrow as a secondary attack (hell runs are difficult with magezons though) I will post my items and more stuff later tonight, i have to go to work!

I don't really play D2 much anymore, but I still have a zon build similar to this. This zon used Mavina's set. A couple of ongoing problems I had with this character was keeping my mana pool full and resists in hell. I also grew to hate the time delay on immolation arrow. I managed to level this character into the low 80's too, but started playing Guild Wars.....so now all my characters are collecting dust on the east realm. Congrats on leveling that hc zon to 82, I know my magezon died a few times on the way.

BTW, I'm not positive about the valkyrie level, but I have read in several zon guides that having more than 17 points (with item bonuses) in valk does not improve it much. These guides suggested lvl 17 and then placing any additional points elsewhere, maybe a synergy for those elemental arrow attacks.

yah I have some of those problems too....but my mana seems to always be in check thanks to a very nice bow i have ;) i just put 20 into valkyrie, im not sure why but it seemed right at the time. oops. I didnt really give my zon as much depth as my summoner necro. but she stills owns cows and i have some nice loot with her as well. i pretty much use her to help rush my friends or go on runs. Heres my equipment (as i promised):
Windforce (will add sockets soon) and an Eaglehorn as my secondary, Shaftstop, vamp gaze, war travelers, some junky rare gloves that give me mana leech and IAS, string of ears, highlords wrath, and 2 sojs for rings. i need some charms though, but otherwise shes pretty much god-like when it comes to her equipment....if only she was good for PvP.... Im welcome to any advice, comments, flame, random rants, etc. :D

Could you explain to me what Bow I should aim to get? The only reason I never made a Frost Maiden was because I didn't have time to research the proper bows.

Regarding bows: Are you sure Windforce is such a good idea on a mageazon? your damage won't come from the bow damage anyway. It think it would be better to build the runeword "melody" in a amazon bow with + to bow skills.

windforce has leech and knockback, and i can trade it for some really good items as well, thats really the only reason i have it. As I said before, im not taking this zon too seriously.... As far as bows go, id go for a windforce, eaglehorn, or lycanders aim - OR - you could find nice rare bow or a cruel hydra bow and give it sockets/runewords. + skills is always nice as well. actually thats not a bad idea, regarding melody....hmm..

@SK: Lycanders aim would be a decent choice, but windforce or eaglehorn seems like a complete waste. A windforce is a very expensive item and offers 0 extra skills. In addition it has very high strength and dex requirements.

Building a runeword in a hydra bow also seems quite pointless imo. It still has high requirements and no skills. I also don't understand how you are going to put a runeword in a Cruel bow.

If you build a melody in an Ashwood Bow or a Stag Bow with +3 to bow skills you will get a total of +6 to bow skills and knockback for tree very cheap runes. You also get extremely low strength and dex requirements.

Don't forget the Magewrath bow, it has a nice 15% mana leech.

I was under the impression (at least for the Frost Maiden), that to maximise your elemental damage, you must use a bow with as much elemental damage as possible, or is this only to increase freeze duration?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but in case I do: It is important to increase cold length yes, and that is achived by extra cold damage. I would use cold damage from charms though, not neccessarily from the bow.

Also the damage output is not dependant on the physical damage of the bow, but added elemental damage might figure into it, about that I'm not sure.

As I'm only play PvM I can't really help you out there. I know the needs of a PvP character can be quite different. In addition my PvM magazon uses frozen arrow to freeze monsters and then immolation arrow to burn them. A tactic that I belive would be pointless in PvP.

I would think some of the runeword bows would be great; maybe wrath or ice. Also, a Lycander's aim or Bloodraven's charge (with good stats) might be good cheaper alternatives.
A good helm would be Nightwing's Veil or Tal Rasha's death mask for those on a budget.
I would go with rare or crafted gloves that give IAS, +skills, and whatever bonus mods you can get.
I still like silkweave boots for a magezon to keep your mana up.
For a belt, there are several options; razortail, gloom's trap, or any of the elite unique belts. It would depend on your needs and wealth.
For jewelry, ravenfrost and maybe a Bul Katho's if you can afford it. A mara's kaleidoscope amulet would be nice.

I think to play a PvE magezon you need +skills, mana, resists, life, and ias.
