Hireling/Mercenary list

Post by Frodo1 »

Does anyone have a link to, or can you provide a list of the npc's that can be hired to join your party?

The reason I ask is that I am now inspired to try to make a party with all mages that all use summoned creatures. I know of Deru (nature magic in mercenary level), Taar, and Finala. Of course, I could also use Lothar in mercenary level, but I would prefer not to. So, are there more? I've made it half way through the game, but there must be more npc's out there to hire that focus on magic.

Eva is the last companion you can add to your party, and she's a melee fighter. You've probably seen everybody that you can add.

If you completely ignore Lothar in mercenary, he turns into a combat mage in veteran.

Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

Thanks, SW. As always, a helpful post.

BTW Does simply talking to Lothar prevent his conversion, and, does he remain a combat mage at the third level of difficulty? I don't remember opening a dialogue with him, but then again, I may have done that just to check out his skill distribution.

I'm pretty sure that as long as you don't add him to your party in mercenary, you'll be able to add the combat mage version of him in veteran. Some people have also been able to release companions in veteran to pick up the new versions, but that seems to be hit and miss. I've never been able to release a companion.

I haven't made it to elite level yet, so I don't know what the third version of Lothar is like. But if you add him in veteran, it doesn't really matter. Companions in your party remain exactly the same when you jump to a new difficulty level (in case that wasn't clear).

Hit and miss is more like it.

I had Lothar in my group up until we rescued Eva. I ended up using Eva as my primary Tank and made Lothar a dual-wielding machine with Agarrus Mace and Falchion from the Night's Shadow Set. At the beginning of the Veteran Difficulty, the new Lothar ended up being a Combat Mage sporting a robe, mage head piece, and all them fancy spells.

I also notice that A complete set of Armor including weapons in Mercenary Difficulty is a lot less effective and less inferior than a scrounge set that is acquired during Veteran Difficulty. I ended up stripping down my Ranger(Sharpshooter)'s set of Olimarch's Bane Set and just went with random Walmart special in the town of Eirulan. He could barely break 800hp with Orlimarch, with the Walmart special armor, he now has 1025 HPs, almost 200AC(armor) and max damage of 245. Orlimach's cant even come close to that.

Sorry for derail but I thought I would share that since you started the subject of the Mid game.
Anyway, Lothar is a mage in my game at Veteran difficulty even after using Lothar as a Damage dealing warrior during Mercenary difficulty.

Would love to see some of your Ranger's stats and if anyone has made Deru into a Rogue like Ninja. She is a bad ass Ninja but the range in throwing skill blows. Let me know what you think.

So far i can't find a better tank then Lothar with full shield specs. at lvl 68 he has 2900 hits with 1100 AC and around 50-60% chance to block attacks cause of the shield he ahs on. I just hit provoke at the begining of any sizeable fight and he holds agro the whole time. piece of cake. Gives my DWer and nature mage plenty of time to mow thro the mobs 1 at a time.

I use Lothar as my tank from very beginning of the game. My mage and ranger (Deru) are to weak to stand against hordes of monsters alone. And Lothar with armor about 1700 (with provoke on) is unmovable to anyone.

Also, somebody asked if Lothar still is combat mage on elite. Indeed he is. And Deru is nature mage.
