In act II, in one of the side quests a woman asks you to find a reagent for an old staff. Everytime I go see her, I never seem to have the right reagent. Is it something that I will eventually find and will be very obvious to what it is (is it something specific that you can only use to complete the quest), or is it simply a common reagent that you can find anywhere with luck?
You need a rainbow trinket. You should be having at least one at this stage of game. I had 3 when I first got there. But You must have them in yout bacpack (having them in stash don't work).

hmm...I just did the frozen cave last night, and didnt find one. There was another type of reagent, but it was not the rainbow trinket. I guess I'll hope to be lucky and find one elsewhere!
You can also try to purchase it in the shop. If the shopkeeper doesn't have it then you can save and exit the game and try it again after load. I think that a rainbow trinket is a common reagent so it can be purchased.

Not the one in the Vai'kesh forest, but much later, in the snowy area.
Jumbik: It's exceedinly rare in veteran and elite, because you don't find many low-level treasures there.
